It means the data can go both ways, known as a 'Crossover' cable.

A 'Patch' cable is used from a router to a computer.

Both are wired differently.

Data goes both ways on both cables. Crossover cable reverses the send and receive wires

That is what I meant. Sure I did that ages ago and it worked.
The internal wires all cross over inside the cable.

Remove the old HDD and put it in the new computer and copy across.
Or, buy an external HDD enclosure/caddy.

A vote for the Caddy option from me.

Newer network cards shouldn't need the use of crossover cables, as they should be able to to autosense whats connected and swap the pins in software... the "should" is the critical bit, though.

DannySeagull, for me the easiest option is the external enclosure, but if you don't want to bother with that, if you could get it to me, I'd do you a favour and copy it for you!

Plug the monitor into the old PC, copy the files to a memory stick (pen drive to the more technically minded) until it's full then reattach the monitor to the new machine and copy the files from the stick. Repeat as required.

We have already ascertained that he doesn't have a working monitor. A caddy is definitely the way to go and will cost less than a tenner. Pull the Hard drive out of the old machine and have a look at the connectors. If they look like the bottom of this pic:

Then you need to buy a SATA enclosure like this

3.5 SATA to USB HD Hard Disk Drive Enclosure Caddy Case on eBay (end time 30-Sep-10 08:04:03 BST)

They are cheaper if you buy from China on EBay and this is just a random one to demonstrate (Not my listing before anyone says)

If the connector looks like this:

Then you need an IDE enclosure like this

3.5" IDE TO USB External Aluminium Enclosure Caddy Case on eBay (end time 16-Oct-10 01:29:09 BST)

Just shove the hard disk into the enclosure and connect the USB cable from it into your laptop and Windows should mount it automatically and you can copy the file off.

You should try working with some of the people I do, they'd have lost interest by the end of your second sentence. It never fails to amaze me that so many people who need a computer to do their job are so utterly clueless as to how they work. It keeps me in a living but it can be very annoying.

I have worked with luddite auditors for the last 11 years so I think I have some idea. And that is why rather than just suggesting a caddy, I explained how to do it. If he doesn't want to read past the first sentence then he can pay someone in the Friday Ad £15 an hour to do it. And long may it continue as my new job is for an IT services company helping companies who have no idea what to do when their computer goes wrong.
