It's an autonomous constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Basically, that means it is still part of Denmark, but far, far more self-governing than, say, Scotland is within the UK. For example, it has resigned its membership of the EU while Denmark stays within it. It's just a matter of time, though - it'll be independent soon.
