I can't believe people think this is new technology. I've worked at places where this has been in place for 10 years. You just top it up every now and then for food in the canteen. If you only put the amount you want to use every time then it probably would get a bit boring, but that's a ridiculous way to use it. Just stick say £10 or £20 on when you get paid and see how long it lasts you.

I've heard of this scheme being used in Germany. I think there may be machines in the stadium where you can charge up your card, but it means you don't use cash in the queues for the burgers, you just have a queue at the machine...

I think part of the problem here is that while a lot of fans are very techy-savvy and use this stuff regularly, a lot don't, nor would they wish to, and there seems to be an unwillingness to recognise that.

We've (not for the first time) had all this on here months ago, long before the Argus and I can see many benefits of the cashless model.

The reason for my scepticism was (and remains) the potential cost in fans. And the thing is, we're all guessing on that one, no one can say 100 per cent that it wouldn't affect gates, or even that it would, because you're talking about a figure that would be absent, not present. It's down to best-guess and some knowledge of fans' behaviour.

Surely you will be able to set your card to an auto top up feature when it drops below a fiver just like you can with an Oyster, if not then it's not very smart for a smartcard is it?

Set auto-top up so once he gets down to (say £2) it puts another £10 on, if he can't sort that, then laugh at him

Cant see 82 year old Cyril, lifetime Goldstone old boy flipping out his smart card paying for things left right and centre. Its going to be a PAINFUL first few months for other supporters, and dare I say it , the staff.

It appears that the Argus have formulated their postulation on the back of last week's Fans Forum (Shock Horror!). Sir Martin Patterson (BHA Cultural Attaché) was asked about the use of the Smart Card System at The Amex, & he said they were looking to use the technology to enable supporters to pay for all manner of goods & services on matchdays. He did, however, confirm that there would certainly be a place too for similar payments to be made "with good old-fashioned cash", so our local rag seemingly decided to omit this information for effect. Who'd have thought?

I think it sounds ok , Bound to get a few instances of people not realising how much is on their card and could cause que issues.

Best not to think about it I reckon hon - as it's bound to be the usual price structure, 'cunningly tailored to a large captive audience'. (AKA rip-off rates).
