Judging from some of the comments, it must be the silly season!!

Who would you like us to sign to play up front and go for promotion?I would be because at that point I would realise we're not interested in promotion.
He would be a good signing , maybe only 15 goals a season which is reasonable if he is the 3rd choice striker.

and it would be good if it happened soon - need a lift after the England nightmareI think he is right though in the sense that a strikeforce of Barnes, Murray and Holroyd won't fire us to the top six. While I think we need a few more players (Barnes, a left winger, a central midfielder and centre half), I would say that the most important signing is the first choice striker and will be the one we spend most money on (whether in terms of wages or transfer fee).
Well my main problem is obviously that I don't think Murray and Barnes will score enough goals to get us promoted. I like Murray and I'm ok with Barnes, but I don't see either of them breaking the 20 goal barrier.
Also, they're both quite slow and fairly physical, so I'd say we need to be looking for someone a bit quicker. People use the word "proven" a lot. I'm not sure that needs to be the case. Look at Rhodes at Huddersfield last year for example. We just need someone for a few hundred grand that has done something to suggest they're good but still has plenty to prove. I'm no football scout so I'm not sure I can pinpoint a name, but someone in a similar position to that of Rhodes this time last year, ie fringes of a championship squad.

He might of just signed for us according to the Plymouth messageboard. Could be something in it:

Someone like Jon Stead, been transfer listed at Ipswich, not that unrealistic imo. Nathan Tyson, Leon Best, Joel Garner, just a few that would be possibilities.
I would say your second paragraph describes Barnes fairly well. I thought Barnes was fairly quick, not Lua-Lua obviously but I don't think you need to be if your movement is any good. I think his performances for us last season in a role which, I think, didn't entirely suit his game would be enough to convince people.Well my main problem is obviously that I don't think Murray and Barnes will score enough goals to get us promoted. I would agree that we still need another striker, I think if Murray was able to stay fit and had a brain him and Barnes would be a great partnership but since neither of those things are true it would be good to get someone esle in too that can challenge for a first team place more than Barker or Holroyd. Obviously when you think about this you think of names that you have heard of but that's not neccesarily the way to go, when you look at Peterbrough's promotion team for example it was mostly made up of players signed from non league. People whine when we sign non league players, but it is more a case of being able to find the RIGHT ones rather than who they are or where they come from.Finchley Seagull said:I think he is right though in the sense that a strikeforce of Barnes, Murray and Holroyd won't fire us to the top six.
