Would be good, but hope he's not the main/only striker we sign.
What do you seriously think?

Of course he isn't our main striker.I fully expect a big money signing striker as well.

Expect or hope?

I will lay my cards down and say we WILL sign a top drawer striker.I'm confident of that and to be honest it's pretty obvious.

We have lost Forster,Davies and Dickinson.

If Barnes signs we are still short of a 20 goal striker.

Barnes is not a 2o plus goal player regardless of his strike rate when he was with us.

I still can't believe people don't rate him, how many goals did he need to score in order to prove himself to some people? As well as this, the lad is 20 years old guys...

Spot on.
With the players leaving, i EXPECT a top name striker.

Its not that people dont rate him, read the posts, its that most people dont see him as the 20 goal striker we desperately need. The guy scored 4 goals ffs, much like Andrew scored 3 in 3 starts last year (plus sub appearances).
Im more than happy to have him in the squad as an option, but he cannot be relied upon to be our 20 goal striker, which is what we need for promotion.

6 goals in the football league doesn't prove much really does it.

4 goals in 4 starts and 4 sub appearances for us sounds so much better, doesn't it, and it allows for the fact that it is much more representative of how he will perform for us than how he performed for plymouth when he was a youth breaking through to the first team.

Looked like a decent player on loan, but if we are pinning our hopes on him then we could be set for a disappointing season.

Indeed, although a scuffed sitter that he fluffed against Tranmere, only for the keeper to fall over it, and a deflection from a Lee Hendrie shot at Southend, could suggest that his short term scoring record is unlikely to be continued over a longer period.

However, I don't think he's a bad player, nor do most people on here. But like the majority, I don't think he's going to get 25 goals - he isn't that strong, tall or fast. Other than his goals he hasn't looked much of a threat in games, although I appreciate you can't argue with his decent scoring record.

Feel free to pin hopes on him as the new Zamora if you want, but I'm going to be a bit more realistic. Assuming he signs, he could do well for us - but we're going to need someone with more experience and more superior attributes who's capable of banging in the vast amount of goals needed to get us out of this division. Hopefully Poyet feels the same, as personally, I can't see a strikeforce of Murray, Barnes, Holroyd and Barker taking us anywhere.

I don't particularly rate him but he's a decent option in the SQUAD. If he's our main striker and playing every game then we're in trouble. Reliable goalscorer + Murray + Barnes = good. Murray + Barnes + some non-entity like Holroyd = very bad.

I would agree with the second part of your post. I think Holroyd could still be useful but wouldn't want him any higher than 4th in the pecking order. Also, Baz can play up front as well as on the wing so that offers another option in terms of numbers if we sign a first choice left winger. I would also agree that the new striker should be absolute first choice at this level with Murray and Barnes battling it to be the second striker and Holroyd and Baz as back up. The first choice striker we choose will probably decide our season too as even with Barnes we probably don't have the strikeforce to challenge for the top 6.

As for your first point, I don't see what more Barnes could have done to win the fans over. He put himself about, chased lost causes, showed quite a lot of intelligence with his runs in my view and, crucially, showed he had a knack of being in the right place at the right time to score. It is hard to criticise and, at only 20, I think he would be a very good signing assuming he isn't costing a ridiculous transfer fee.
