I'm not sure we're going to win it, but we will still go far.

We'll either win it or be stopped by Holland, Brazil or Spain in the latter stages..

I stand by this prediction..

I wouldn't go as far as to say "it's in the bag", but we're not out yet. We COULD still win it. This isn't like one of those league situations where a team is twenty points away from safety with seven games left, but 'mathematically' could still survive - I still maintain that on our day with a bit of luck and a fair wind and a following tide we can beat any of the teams in this world cup.

From an English point of view this is shaping up to be a 'traditional' world cup: lots of expectation (though admittedly not as much as in previous years), followed by disappointing, inexplicably shit early performances. History suggests that we'll now get our act together (usually after the manager has had to change his mind on certain things) and qualify from the group stage, perhaps in style. The early performances will be forgotten, the expectation level will be cranked up again .... and then we'll meet with glorious failure somewhere in the knock-out stages against one of the 'Big Four'.

I am absoutely, 100% convinced that we'll beat Slovenia with a convincing performance. After that, well who knows? Hopefully history will only repeat itself so far.

.... Just to add the team I'm most worried about is the Italians. This is shaping up to be a 'traditional' world cup for them as well: like us they're often shit in the early group games before getting their act together. Unlike us though once they've got their act together they often reach the final.

Not a traditional world cup for Spain though? They were quickly out of the blocks in 2006, but not this time round. Expect them to beat Chile and Honduras and make it all the way to the final, as initially predicted.

It is odd how France, Spain, England, Germany and Italy are all in trouble really. Nevertheless, I bet the only ones who won't be in the last 16 are France.

No, we can't ALL have traditional world cups!

Anyway, like I say I hope this one breaks with tradition and the Big Four (and Spain) all implode giving one of us lesser nations a chance.
