Alan Shearer

Every time I read an "expert" comment by Shearer, I always (without fail) find myself disagreeing with him. His World Cup Squad had no defensive midfield backup to Barry & his formations are always weird. Even when talking about Spain he says they won't win without Torres, ignoring the fact that Spain have class acts in Villa & Pedro, and have Silva who often plays forward.

Anyone else think he's clueless?

Part of the BBC's old boys network, you can imagine him, Hansen, Lawrenson and Lineker chortling over their own witticisms over a pint at the 19th hole.

I dont think anyone believed he would except Newcastle fans and a few red tops

Quite a few of us believed he wouldn't be any good, actually. The only Newcastle fans the media ever interviews are the shirtless, morbidly obese ones with 'NUFC' scrawled across their shuddering guts, standing outside SJP chanting "WE WANT SHEARER!"

He's got no tactical nous, no real experience managing and has no opinions of his own on the football he is watching (listen to him parroting Hansen et. al. without ever daring to break ranks). He's a safe bet, hence why the Beeb hired him.

That being said, he's still one of my favourite players of all time, and nowt will change that.

Alan Shearer has never said anything of note on MotD ever. Ever. Painfully dull.

Just states the painfully obvious all the time. Has nothing insightful to offer and has no charisma whatsoever. He was SHIT managing Newcastle and was lucky to win his only game. Don't think he would have done as well as Hughton had he stayed.

I dont mind Lineker, and oddly Lawrenson is OK on the radio
Totally agree.

Shearer is at least a reasonable pundit, even if he is tactically a bit odd (and I agree that he is). He is the only one who will pull no punches having a go at current international players, and I like that.

Can't stand him - the only reason Auntie has him as a pundit is because he is a prestige name. And this is a guy I used to worship as a player in my early teens.

If ex-pros-turned-pundits like Paul Walsh or Tony Cottee were on the BBC as pundits instead and then came out with all of the half-baked observations that Shearer made, then they'd be given the axe in no time.

I would've said EXACTLY the opposite. He NEVER says anything vaguely controversial, EVER.

"I think Gerrard and Lampard can work together"
"I think Wayne Rooney is a GOOD player"

He is thick, surly and pointless as a pundit. Lee Dixon is MILES better.

I will watch with interest to see how he behaves through this tournament, to see if I have got him completely wrong. To be fair, this is a distinct possibility, seeing as I often end up watching MotD on the PC, with the sound turned down.

Correct. Also, Shearer was very unhelpful and obnoxious with his media work as a player, and logic tells you if he didn't understand at all what the job entailed then, why would he later (albeit for big bucks)?

There are players/managers who are intelligent, knowledgeable, articulate, brave (to criticise their peers) and witty. They might not be the biggest names, but they would be better pundits. A straw poll of journos working with the players every day would quickly tell you who those people were.

Of the current crop Lee Dixon is excellent, Savage is all right, and Clarke Carlisle is getting some deserved media time now.
