Just been discussing the permitations of the World Cup with a colleague. Let's just say for the sake of this that England made it through to the semi finals - I think our route would look like this:

IF we win the group which hopefully we should:

2nd round - very tough to call and will be a tough game regardless but i'd plump for Serbia to come runners up to Germany in Gp D so we'd play Serbia. IT could be the Aussies or Ghana though.

1/4 Final - On paper assuming the French win their group which is fairly easy we'd be playing them (France) in the 1/4 final - and I would fancy us to beat them.

That would set up a semi final against Brazil - assuming Brazil win the group of death. With Ivory Coast and Portugal in that group that is by no means a given. What we would like is for Brazil not to win their group then it would be likely we'd get Portugal or the Netherlands (prob better than getting Brazil)...

I don't think the route to the semis is that bad atall apart from a tricky 2nd round match. And i think we should be hoping Brazil don't win their group to increase our chances with a possible Semi Final if we do get there...

Exciting stuff - i'm confident of a SF place anyway! :clap2: Then anything can happen...

1/4 final knock out on pens.

John Terry to miss the vital kick, then immediately signs for new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and never plays for England again.

England will win the group, then play Germany who will finish second to Ghana in their's.

We will draw that game and go out on penalties.

Capello will be sacked, and the paper's will all say that it was the fault of the pitch / ref / vuvuzuelas.

Yeah, the Germany group is the one group where all 4 sides will believe they could win it.

Conceivably the route could be Germany > France > Holland > Spain, which would make up for not qualifying for Euro 2008 in a rather-ironic fashion.

What's exciting is the effect on the African nations of playing on their home continent.

I got knocked out by France in the 1/4's on Fifa World Cup 2010 (Captain your Country) last night. I was VERY pissed off. Especially as it was 1-0, and cheating Henry scored

Who do you see France playing in the second round to assume they get through to the quarters?

I wouldn't be so sure of France winning the group. Mexico are a class act.

I actually fear Australia more than Germany these days. Recently, we've done well over the Germans, whereas the Aussies pretty much own us in whatever sport we play (except cricket, for the time being).

Australia were bloody unlucky in going out to Italy 4 years ago and I reckon they'll fancy their chances again.

Conceivably I would expect our 2nd round game to be tougher than the QF's. Group A looks to be the easiest group and other than the Argies Group B doesn't look bad which is where our QF game will come from.

Of course it is never this straight forward, I remember 2002 I had us down to finish runners up in our group and go out to France in the Last 16, we won our group and France didn't even qualify from theirs.

:dunce:

If the world cup of shirts is anything to go by, we'll be out the first time we play a team in blue and white stripes...

3 with Arsenal, 3 with Chelsea.

Team coach to Jo'burg and presumably FIFA will provide some seats for them if they want. I would imagine most of them will have arrange a holiday in a hurry by the time the final is being played.

Nah. They can afford to spend out on a holiday now "just in case", and should they make the final, they won't miss the money, and will probably be able to just show up late.

It never works out how you think it is going to.

But one thing I will say before a ball is kicked. We are definitely in the better half of the draw.
