Isn't deputy PM realistically a role for show? I know he has to run the parliament when the PM is off on holiday, and is supposed to be a close advisor to the PM, what what are his actual duties?

You have a very valid point. The current labour party are über authoritarian which probably sits less well with the lib dems than the con's social stance.
