Campsite recomendations

We have promised the kids we will go camping this year. We have the tent, and some of the will, but where should we go? Likely to only be a long weekend rather than any longer.

Anyone got any good suggestions for campsites. We're thinking of New Forest way perhaps, but happy to consider further afield for the right site.

Redshoot in the new forest is where I go, for one reason only.

It has a cracking old pub next to it that brews it's own beer.

Trouble is, it's pricey, and in season a minimum stay is required.

Forest Holidays: Ashurst Caravan Park and Campsite, New Forest Camp site

went here last year and had a fun time despite it pissing down. Has a good, very child friendy (large playground etc) pub next to the site which helped!

We are off to the highly recommended Merley Court, the far end of the New Forest, in August.
As well as using Honeybridge south Horsham for our 'practise' runs.

Try Hollands Wood at Brockenhurst. Some of our best family weekends were spent there. There is a meadow in front of the site for games, the site is large and there are lots of families. It is close to Brockhurst for chippies/chinese etc if you don't fancy cooking. You can walk there for the pubs. There is a small river nearby suitable for paddling. It has planty of toilets and showers (well enough anyway).

You can make some good memories for the kids there.

I've been a bit of a holiday snob in the past and the thought of both holidaying in the UK and camping filled me with absolute horror.

But we gave it a go last year and it was absolutely stupendous.

We did a long weekend just outside Looe initially - getting the place from a 'Cool Camping' book that someone had bought us. I doubt anyone could have had a more ideallic first camping experience. We stayed at Bay View Farm which is a small campsite overlooking the South Cornish coast. The weather was wonderful and just chilling around the site - the beers, the BBQs, the sense of freedom that kids have (that otherwise seems lacking) was amazing and I didn't want to leave.

We then had a week in North Norfolk with friends later in the year. The weather was not so kind and the site was a lot bigger (can't remember which one now) but very well equipped and we still had a fantastic week. Again - the freedom for kids to make new mates and wander from the view of parents but remain safe is great for all.

Like your kids, Giraffe, mine has enjoyed some very nice holidays including the delights of Orlando but there is no need to spend thousands of pounds for the kids to have a good time, nor you either.

I'm a massive camping and UK holiday convert. Sadly we're unlikely to go camping this year as any day now we'll have a new baby and I think it's a bit anti-social to other campers to inflict that a new-born upon their otherwise peaceful nights.

This is where we stayed in Norfolk - just outside Cromer. Big campsite but excellent facilities, I thought (as a novice).

If you want a local trial run and have any interest in fishing... I strongly recommend Sumners Ponds, in Barns Green. Fantastic lakeside pitches and create fishing for novices and experts alike.

Would also agree with Hollands Wood near Brockenhurst... we've had some great times there when the kids were young.

Absolutely. They are some of our now grown-up kids best memories. We went to Hollands Wood regularly with friends and their families - and they loved the freedom (and increasing freedom as they got older). A group of kids where there is safe cycling, trees to climb, streams to block, camps to build are guaranteed to enjoy themselves. Plus their parents are there if wanted.

We went to other sites and other parts of the country - but they did enjoy going back to the same place.

Only place to consider - Fullers pub and excellent curry house just outside. Job done.

I've just looked it up online and it does look ace. I've made a note for when we next go camping.

Went to Roundhill in the New Forest a couple of years back. Can't remember exactly where in the New Forest, but it was very nice.

Perfect setting for beers around the barbecue on a pleasant evening. That was the first trip. On the second, it absolutely PISSED it down all weekend.

But other than the weather, it was lovely.

I was about to post that, very resaonable I thaught and they have just re-furbed the toilet/shower block which always makes it more enjoyable.

With Lyndhurst only 5 mins drive down the road aswell its got everything you need, and its only 90mins from Brighton which is an added bonus!
