Gannon named Peterborough manager

By John Sinnott

Championship bottom club Peterborough United have appointed Jim Gannon as their new manager following the sacking of Mark Cooper.

The 41-year-old Gannon, who was sacked by Motherwell in December, made his name at Stockport County, who he led to promotion to League One in 2008.

Cooper was fired on Monday after only one win in 13 games since taking over from Darren Ferguson on 14 November.

"It's a fantastic opportunity and I'm excited," Gannon told the Posh website.

"At Stockport when I went there we were seven points adrift and we stayed up so it can be done," added Gannon, who will take charge for the first time for Saturday's home game with Queens Park Rangers.

Gannon's four-year term at Stockport came to an end in May 2009 after the club went into administration.

He began his playing career as a defender for Dundalk in Ireland, where he grew up, before going on to sign permanent deals with Sheffield United, Crewe and Stockport - where he made over 400 appearances in 10 years.

He ended his playing days at Shelbourne, where he took his first managerial appointment in June 2004.

In December the following year, he returned to Stockport, helping them avoid relegation.

"My philosophy is good passing football," said Gannon.

"It's how I believe the game should be played and it brings out the best in players. It inspires them and motivates them to play football in the right manner."

It's Peterborough v QPR this Saturday.

A high stakes encounter I'm sure you'll agree, what with the losing manager losing his job.

Probably.

Brilliant appointment, they've got this one right. The appointment of Mark Cooper was baffling and bizarre, I feel sorry for the chap really. He'd been doing such a brilliant job with Kettering, under another madcap chairman in that Ladaak chap, and Peterborough turned his head before sacking the chap so soon! Daft, but they got this appointment right. Top bloke, Mr Gannon.

Dicker didn't even get in the team under Gannon and they were happy to let him go to us. McNulty would be a big risk for anyone considering he hasn't returned to his old form since his injury and Dickinson and Tunnicliffe don't even get in our team so it is hard to see who he would sign.

The Port Vale fans think mr Davies is "exactly what we've been missing", so if I were Snoopy, I'd be concentrating more on getting my head down at a club who does want me, then spend time on the forum of a club who don't appear to.

 Mr Davies, calling me a dickhead is a bit harsh. Especially if you're actually NOT Davies, because then it would just be random abuse, which I'm sure you wouldn't dish out on the internet! But the fact you use such a word at me does support the suggestion you are in fact, Davies. Especially considering EVERY post you make is relating to the chap. I hope, sincerely, you haven't joined One Vale Fan, because knowing what the fans are saying about you on the internet is never going to help you.

You've been honest about it from the start though, haven't you? Whereas Snoopy only posts about Davies but I've never read anything by him admitting to even knowing the man. It just seems a bit odd to me that he would get involved in this forum and only talk about Davies related issues. If it is Davies, then it can't be doing him any favours knowing what is going on here.

And I would say much the same to you too, OTB. I'm sure you've read alot on here about other players which isn't nice to read if you actually know the person involved, and one thing I'm sure of is that some of the folks on here will get around to slagging off Dickinson at some point this season. It's not worth reading, if you know the person involved. In my opinion, atleast. Obviously it's your choice, but personally, I wouldn't want to know what's being said about someone I know by some of the users on this site. :)
