I honestly cannot think Tony Bloom could have appointed anyone better than Gus Poyet. I am still to this day delighted he is manager of Brighton & Hove Albion! :albion2:

Never mind about Jim, never wanted him anyway - too dull, just another boring League One level manager.

Totally agree about Gus, but this ain't about Gus. What I'm saying is that the article is food for thought in terms of where we might have ended up had we appointed him. It maybe that Gannon just didn't get on with the whole Motherwell set-up. Making a team competitive in Europe, let alone the SPL, on sub 5k crowds must be a mare. Mcghee did amazingly well results-wise to be able to use that job as a stepping stone to Aberdeen.

If we'd stuck with McGhee and sacked the fans who wanted him gone we'd be in a much better place now, FACT :p

Its a really strange episode for Gannon.

Beyond any doubt he is a fantastic coach, and tactician.

Arguably, he is too focussed on doing it all with teenagers to the point of being bloody minded.

I have no problem with managers falling out with players, and demanding that it has to be done his way, but where Gannon did fall down was relationship management. In a few short months, he managed to completely fall out with the referees, the press, the majority of the squad, and in the end the board at Motherwell.

John Boyle (the Motherwell chairman) has broken his own rule and come out with some extremely pointed remarks about Gannon. He talks about being fed up with Gannon complaining that he was not being backed by the board, when they were actively trying to (and did) secure Gannon's main targets for the transfer window.

More than 1 paper in Scotland carried the story that Gannon was apparently telling staff at Motherwell, and the press that he was going to be the next Brighton manager.

It seems that Boyle gives his management teams a fair bit of freedom - he did not insist on McGhee moving to the area, and was happy for him to commute from Brighton. Gannon had a similar arrangement during his short tenure.

I guess that more will come out in time - but it all seems very odd for a man revered for his morals etc.

From the outside, he certainly revitalised Motherwell by giving youth its head, with good coaching and sound tactics. After an initial surge of good results, they had spent over 2 months without a win. It seems that Gannon did not fancy the job of turning it around...

If you are interested - this article kind of summed up the reaction to Gannon leaving http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/columnists/billydodds/2801045/Fir-Park-so-grim-with-Jim.html

Perhaps the reason Stockport were doing so well under Gannon was because they had SO many quality players. When Gannon was in charge they had:

McNulty, Dickinson, Tunnicliffe, Dicker (Now to us)
Oli Johnson (Now at Norwich)
Carl Baker (Coventry)
Blizzard (Bristol Rovers)
Fon Williams (Linked to Championship clubs)
Michael Raynes (Linked to Championship clubs)

I can't think of the rest but there's certainly a lot more players who have left and gone onto better clubs...

So that's how we managed to scrape a draw. I see.
