That's now Prior, Hodd, Brown and Machan on the staff - are they expecting some sort of keeper crisis? I know that Prior will spend most of the time playing for England but three in reserve seems a bit excessive.

Matt Machan joins Sussex playing staff

Sussex CCC is delighted to announce that Matthew Machan, 18, has signed a Junior Pro contract, which will see him at the Club until the end of 2011.

An aggressive left-handed batsman, Machan has impressed in both Second XI and Sussex Premier League cricket this year and has come through the ranks of the youth system and Academy at Hove.

The Junior Pro contract is a new initiative to bridge the gap between the Academy and the professional squad. Before the Junior Pro contract was introduced, there was nothing in place that gave sufficient support to recognise the ability of talented young adults who need to gain additional experience to prepare them for the challenges of professional cricket. The Club is keen to help Matthew develop his career and this arrangement will enable him to dedicate his time to the sport.

Matt Machan said: "I am extremely excited to have signed for Sussex for the next two years. I have put a lot of hard work in to getting where I am but realise this is only the start. This is a great opportunity at a very successful club."

Mark Robinson, Professional Cricket Manager, said: “Matt is a promising cricketer who’s going to be our first ever junior pro. He deserves our support to help fulfil his dream of becoming a successful county cricketer and we are very excited about the talent and potential that this young batsman holds.”
