make sure you go down to the copacabana late at night to see some of the real brazil.

Spectacular. Go to the Sambadrome - a purpose-built stadium where the carnival clubs (a bit like Lewes Bonfire Societys only with louder drums, less clothes and much better tableaux) parade between two banks of terraces. Yes, it's terraces, no seats unless you're in a private box. It happens over two nights (Sun & Mon before Shrove Tues), starts about 10pm and goes on until the sun comes up. They announce the winner on Tues - which is a day of street carnival all over town. You can buy CDs of the sambas they dance to if you want to learn the words beforehand.

They also have a number of carnival balls in the days and weeks leading up to the big day. Look out in the press or ask at the hotel. These are well attended but probably not ones to take your wife/girlfriend to as you often get some crazy stuff going on - some of it appearing in DVDs later.

Have already got tickets for this, not really sure what to expect though. Is Rio really as dangerous as it is made out to be or is it just the same as any big, slightly edgy city?

gf's sister went last year and their hostel and 4 others around the area were ramsacked and a few people got beaten up but she still said it was the greatest part of her travels.Imagine it will be incredible and very memorable as long as you dont act recklessly or stupid

Rio yes, carnival no...if you get a chance take a trip out to the Maracana stadium, it is a little dated now but still pretty damn impressive.
