i'm constantly puzzled as to why fans have to advertise the fact that they are missing their own club side's matches in order to watch England.

Don't get me wrong if someone prefers England to their local side that's up to them but then why not have a St George cross with 'England' on it rather than proudly displaying to the world that despite being such a big fan of 'Anytown Rovers' you'd rather travel three times the distance of the town that the club that you're so proud of are playing.

there, i've said it now.

England written acorss a St Georges flag?

So what, as long as they are happy?. If things like that bother you into taking the time to post a thread on it, then what does that say?

Can't people be proud of supporting their club as well as their national side? If you support a team in the top two divisions, your club isn't in action when England are playing so you aren't missing your own team. If you support a team in that isn't in the top two divisions you've got to make a choice between the two, and some people naturally want to take the chance to watch international football. Would you rather the national side played to an empty stadium?

"As long as they are happy" - of course
"Proud of supporting their club as well as their national side" - most people do.

what I mean is, is that if i'd gone to Wembley yesterday, I wouldn't have thought to my self, Aaah i'll take my Brighton embossed St George cross because I love Brighton so much and i'll try and get it on TV because I want everyone to see I love Brighton so much and while i'm on the train to Victoria i'll press my ears against the glass as I pass Preston Park station in case I can hear anything going on at Withdean.

It's a thing called 'Patriotism'.

my point's being missed here.

example: England v San Marino KO3pm Saturday
Blackpool v Swindon KO3pm Saturday

you'll still see hoards of Swindon/Blackpool etc flags at Wembley, so if they support Swindon/Blackpool whoever so much why not go and watch them instead. Patriotism yes, i've heard of that. What about loyalty? i've been to several England matches but i've never missed an Albion match because of it.

I don't think it's anything to do with club loyalty. England is the national team and we all set our club rivalries aside in order to support the national side. Think of it more as a 'gathering of the clans' rather than people being disloyal to their clubs. Certainly if I'd seen a Brighton flag at Wembley yesterday I wouldn't have thought "why aren't they watching us play Wycombe?"

My own pet hate is people who take BRITISH flags to ENGLAND games - you might as well take an E.U. flag. Mind you it is a useful test; if you think a union flag and a cross of St George are interchangeable then you can consider yourself a pig-ignorant cretin.

you wouldn't get league kick off times the same as internationals, the question boils to club or country i think u can do both especially as yesterday i saw the Albion instead of England only because of the opposition and knew the game at wembley was of no relevance and going wednesday instead.

Or you could be a fan of a Premiership or Championship club and therefore NOT be missing your teams game.
And so what if you are? I'm sure there are many games (for example away at Carlisle for Brighton) that hundreds of people can't make but are able to make the short trip to London. God forbid they might take an England flag with BHAFC written on it :shootself

Hells bollocks , i'm not talking about when Brighton are away to Carlisle or indeed taking a BHA England flag to a match, i'm just saying that if, lets say for example Darlington were playing away at Brentford at the same time England were playing a friendly at Wembley you'd still get Darlington fans who not only choose the national side but advertise the fact by displaying their so called loyalty to their club by hanging it on a flag. In other words, if you had to choose between QPR v Brighton or England v Slovenia what would it be?

Brighton obviously.

Your forgetting that maybe the folk who go to the England matches are taking the family for a day out. Maybe they are Brighton season ticket holders that balance Brighton games with England matches?
Or maybe they just wanted a change from a day at the Withdean, where there is usually shit football and no atmosphere.?

Dont lump all the Brighton fans at England matches into the same basket.

I also have to make the decision between attending England and Brighton games on regular occasions, which annoys me no end. I've missed Albion games in the past in favour of gong to England games. For example, I was in Paris when we tonked Torquay 7-2, or whatever it was, and I missed the Tranmere game last season to go to Wembley. Yesterday I chose to go to Withdean because, having seen us at Millwall, I thought we were on the verge of giving someone a hammering. The fact that the England game was a friendly against unattractive opposition also came into the equation. I am going to the Croatia game on Wednesday.

You also have to consider that England members have to accumulate loyalty points in order to give themselves the best chance of obtaining tickets for South Africa. I'm lucky enough to be in the top 2,000 members so did not need yesterday's loyalty point, but others probably felt obliged to go.

As for taking club themed St Georges crosses to England matches, that's just part of the tradition of following England - it always has been. I've noticed that Dutch and German fans have started doing this (taking club themed national flags to games) more and more as well. The majority of England fans support lower league teams and are proud to advertise the the fact, irrespective of the whether their club side might be playing at the same time. You don't often see Man Utd or Liverpool flags at England matches. Having said that, there's little I hate more than seeing people wearing club shirts at internationals!

We are the Brighton, England boys?

What would be wrong about that? It's actually a sign of unity when far from our green and pleasant land - and when you see YOUR town's flag unfurl at an England game it just reminds you of your roots and how patriotic you are for club and country.

...unless you are Jamie Carragher - and he's a cheating tosser.

for the 97th time, i'm only talking about when both club and country are playing at roughly the same time within the same part of the country (say, within 50 miles)

A bit of an unnecessary thread then isn't it.
People do go to England games when their local team are also playing, and they do not mind showing the flag that they already have that displays their local team or their town with no league team.

When it says "Kettering" across an England flag, why is that questionable? Because Kettering-pubteam-Rovers might play the same day, that makes a difference to them showing the flag? And what does it matter about the distance, to the price of bacon?
