Keeping E-Mail addresses

A friend of mine has his broadband through Pipex i think....therfore has his email accounts with them.

Being self-employed all his work email also goes through these, advertising on van etc.

Is it possible to change broadband provider and for him to keep the mail accounts ?

Depends on Pipex and their policy! Now might be the time to change to something like hotmail!

You risk losing them if they close your account, but some places let you keep or put a forwarder on them. For this reason it's very recommended to get a 'proper' email address that's not tied to a particular ISP, A domain name for 2 years costs about 20 quid and you can host the email with Google Apps.

It might cost him a bit to change his branding on his van, but as long as he renews the domain then he can move email hosts as he wishes.

Also, personally, I wouldn't use a business that used a free email address (like @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com), but ones with their own domain name seem a lot more professional.

And how many plumbers can do that? Alot of plumbers and builders I know use hotmail or gmail for their business and seem to be doing very well!

Most plumbers know someone who is tech savvy, and it's my own personal feelings on the free email service - I'm sure others don't hold the same view.

I create websites and email accounts for all sort of different clients, in most cases if I am creating a website for a low-tech person/company, I'll still register a domain and provide a webmail account for that new domain.

I don't have anyone just using gmail or hotmail, but in all cases I give them the choice. If they chose to have a "corporate mail" account based on their new domain, I record a quick video showing them how to use their email.

You'll be surprised that even some of the most serious "technophobes" can get to grips with stuff quite easily if you make it simple, and explain in a jargon free way.

Yup. If I'm looking for someone to do a job or a company that's important (for example I recently registered with a Vet) I will always favour the one with an up to date website and a non free email address, it simply (to me) looks more professional.
