If music is your bag then the Heart and Hand (traditional old style Brighton boozer-North Road) and The Albert (music based pub for all sorts...Trafalgar St...almost under the station entrance) are a good call.

Please note whilst neither of these pubs are what I would term 'real ale pubs' both have a selection of real ales as well as the standard range of lager, soft drinks and tavern snacks.

I also imagine they will also be stocking up on asti spumante for when we go post match we are staying up laRGE!

Avoid at all costs Burgess Hill, i live there and wouldnt want you to think of Brighton at all comparing to Burgess Hill, soooo boring.
Id stay in the city if i was you as much to do and see, also only 20 minute walk from the main town and Sea front to the station, and get train through to Gatwick

No idea where you're getting Hurstpierpoint from. While it is undoubtedly a lovely and deeply sophisticated little village, home to only the finest people  it is three miles from the nearest railway station and thus not by any stretch of the imagination on the mainline back to London. A taxi from there to Gatwick would cost you thirty or forty quid I imagine.

Thank you very much, Edna.

By the way, whilst my house is a good three miles from the railway station (past all the pubs in the village), Hurstpierpoint actually starts not far West of Stonepound crossroads.....

A taxi from the station to the New Inn is about a fiver each way.....

Other than the occasional odd beer what is nice about the place? It is small, smells, pokey, sells horrible stuff as a rule, is run by a Pompey fan and the staff are generally so far up their own arses they do not know if the sun is shinning.

I'd say there are always several lovely beers and I've found it always very friendly... It is too small and a bit smelly though. Give me the Battle of Trafalgar any day, you can't beat a pint of sussex best.
