Israeli Prime Minister from the BBC website :

On Sunday Mr Olmert warned Israel would respond forcefully to renewed rocket fire.

"We've said that if there is rocket fire against the south of the country, there will be a disproportionate Israeli response to the fire on the citizens of Israel and its security forces," he said.

Is this a dig at the rest of the world for claims that slaughtering umpty thrumpty thousands of children was disproportionate or does he think he can do it again while the rest of the world sits by and does nothing?

"A disproportionate response" seems to me to be as good a definition of terrorism as you could hope to find.

I interviewed someone the other week about the Holocaust and other genocides. After we were done I said to him I thought the actions of both sides in Gaza were pretty horrific. His reply was 'there's no problem, no-one's starving'. Well, that's fine then! Getting blown up, (or by his logic there being gassed in concentration camps) is alright just as long as everybody's got food.

Without making a complicated situation appear simplistic, could it be argued that if Hamas stopped firing rockets into Israel, Israel wouldn't need to respond?

Indeed it could.

It could also be argued that if Israel did not keep sending in snatch squads to Palestine, then perhaps Hamas might have stuck to its original cease fire.

Of course there's the whole fact that Israel has been illegally occupying and bloackading parts of the middle east for the last 40-odd years. It is in contravention of more UN resolutions than any other country, but because it is friends with the US it gets away with, quite literally, murder. Let's not forget the fact that the UN building they blew up the other week was destroyed using white phosphorus shells, which are illegal.
