I'm planning to go to Amsterdam in the Summer. Not interested in pot or prostitutes, just art and architecture etc. Any 'must sees' over there? I've heard there's a few Picassos worth looking at...

Are you going to Amsterdam just because it is cheap?

I'd recommend f***ing Amsterdam off, and buying a train ticket to LONDON which has beautiful architecture, loads of world-famous landmarks and more galleries and museums than you could visit in a month.

People go to Amsterdam to get drunk, laid and stoned - in that order - not to appreciate art

If this is an honest question then you really deserve an appropriate answer, there is loads to do in Amsterdam without the need to frequent the red light district or get stoned on pot...for starters there is the Anne Frank House, well worth a visit, if you like art then try the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum, both are well regarded but a word of advice is to check the opening times, you could try and take in a game at the Amsterdam Arena (home of Ajax) or go for a cruise on the canals...there are also plenty of decent restaurants, regardless of the type of food you like.

Cheers for that

I know what you mean about opening times. When coming back from a France '98 match, I hoped to take in The Louvre, only to find it was shut the day I was in Paris

Catching an Ajax game might be a goer, depending on other factors...

Oh, and I'll probably be shitfaced through most of my sojourn

...if you intend to get shitfaced then prepare yourself for the fact that the Dutch are almost totally incapable of brewing decent beer, with the exception of a few bok, oud and bruin varieties...fortunately for them their neighbours, the Belgians and Germans, are absolutely brilliant at it.

Amsterdam is a quality city, although haven't been there for a fair few years

Too many people go there for the dope and hookers, but there is so much more to do there - I'm not arty by any means but a trip to the Van Gogh museum was a fantastic experience...gave up the dope about 15 years ago but I remember going for a 2 week holiday in 1992, and thinking how cool i was lighting up a joint in McDonalds

I thought Amsterdam was a bit of a seedy dump.

Yep - it is a bit of a dump in my opinion, been a couple of times for work.

Once was forced to stay in a cheap hotel, due to limited availability and quite frankly , if the place had been in London they would have been out of business by the authorities.

Yes it really was that bad.

Having said that the Anne Frank musuem is well worth a visit, I'd also encourage the poster above to do the "moral dilemma" quiz at the end.

Can't be bothered to go into it much, but basically you and a load of other visitors are played videos in a room and you vote anonymously at the end of each after being given a series of moral questions. The scores are displayed on the screen, and the questions and videos are very very cleverly organised so you can start to question your own beliefs.

Genius to put something like that in the Anne Frank museum.

If you do nothing else, visit it - you won't regret it.

surely if you took away all the WEED and HOOKERS it would be like any other european capital, and therefore quite profitable..................taking away the weed wouldn't ruin it at all

I go to Holand once a month for work. No longer stay in Amsterdam, I now stay in Uttrecht. Only 30 minutes by train from the airport, and in my opinion a much nicer city. Still has all the 'attractions' of Amsterdam, you just have to look a bit harder. ;)

I've travelled a lot to Amsterdam for work and I must say that it's never impressed me over much. If you're interested in smoking yourself stupid or visiting whores, there's not a great deal to see - although the Rijksmuseum (the Night Watch is much more impressive in real life than it is in photos) and the Van Gogh museum are both fabulous. I'm sure there are fantastic elements to it, but somehow they've all eluded me.

I agree that Utrecht is a pretty nice city though and also agree that Dutch beer is really pony - you have to be stoned to think Amstel is a good idea.

...prepare yourself for the fact that the Dutch are almost totally incapable of brewing decent beer, with the exception of a few bok, oud and bruin varieties...

That's not entirely true, but they are (almost) incapable of brewing decent lager beers (there are one or two like Kroon Pils that are OK). But the market here is totally dominated by shit brewers like Heineken who have no beermaking skills, but do have huge advertising budgets and very canny marketing men, who are capable of convincing millions around the world that horse piss is cool and the ONLY thing you should drink.

For good Dutch beer, Jopen Koyt, Urthel Hop-it and Texelse Tripel are worth seeking out for starters, and capable of standing alongside all but the best Belgian brews. Amsterdam's 'real' brewery, Brouwerij 't Ij, also turns out some quite drinkable stuff, as does the De Bekeerde Suster microbrewery, which is owned and operated by the Beiaard pubs (there's three of them).

If in Amsterdam and you want to taste some decent Dutch beer, head for the café 't Arendsnest on the Herengracht. They stock every Dutch creation there is, and no Belgian stuff. The barstaff are pretty clued up too, so if you tell them what you like, they should be able to find a brew to your taste.

There is life in Amsterdam beyond the whorehouses and coffee shops. The trouble is most young male British visitors are too stoned - and drunk on some tasteless weak yellow fizz that they have been deliberately misinformed is an alcoholic beverage of note by Freddy Heineken's terrifyingly efficient marketing machine - to notice.

I thought Amsterdam was a bit of a seedy dump.

It is. Full of smug Dutch c unts who think they are f***ing brilliant groovy and fantastically enlightened by letting every drop out in Northern Europe pitch up in what was obviously once a beautiful town.

Have you noticed how many of the dossers and smackheads are British?

The Dutch tolerance model has serious flaws. Saying that I would seriously consider living in Amsterdam. A seedy town with nice architecture and a history of tolerance and law bending is not exactly uncharted territory eh.

Rotterdam is far better if you want brasses and puff without all the Brit stag dickheads, German hippies and moody Eastern Europeans who will stab you as soon as look at you.

Two reasons why those of us in the know live "below the rivers". People know how to live properly down here without being stuck up about it.

ah a bit of proper local knowledge. Where is that mate?

I have always rated the Dutch as top people in my experience, but Amsterdam does sometimes seem to suffer from the sort of equivalent to the Shoreditch/'new' Brightonian invasion.

'Below the rivers' means the provinces of Zeeland, Brabant and Limburg, south of the Rhine and the Maas (I'm in Eindhoven). There is a genuine north-south divide. 'Up in Holland' they are protestant calvinist-influenced, which means they have to feel guilty about every time they enjoy themselves - but they also need to be SEEN to be fair and doing the right thing (hence their outward displays of tolerance). In reality they have little idea how to have a good time, in my opinion.

Down here it is more catholic-influenced (they call it the Burgundian lifestyle and it was once part of the Burgundy Habsburg empire). People go out and get pissed and don't give a f*ck what the neighbours think.

Of course the stuck up northerners all look down their noses at us and regard us all as retarded peasants ('Stomme boeren' - stupid farmers - is the official term I believe), but we don't care.
