It appears to me that the club just cannot win. If they take players on trial, the exercise is ridiculed and thought to be pointless; if they just give out 3 year deals after watching DVDs of players then they receive the same treatment.

How would you rather the club went about assessing players?

I'm just bewildered at the amount of players taken on trial and then not used, sometimes barely even given a chance in the reserves. I would find it hard to believe that there is a club that takes on more unsuccessful triallists in the country.

I was having the same conversation at work with a friend of mine today. He is a filthy Leeds fan and they have a chap by the name of Mike Grellar from america who scored a hat trick on his debut, we then went on to discuss how many triallist have actually gone on to be good and it really is very few. Still it cant hurt to have a look can it?

Went to Woking ( pre-season ) a few seasons back...3 triallists on view ( 3 black players )...none of them impressed.
Opening league fixture was at Reading and when team was announced a certain Maheta Molango was in the starting line-up. My mate said " wasn't he one of those guys we saw at Woking " ( I pretended to remember and said yes )
12 seconds in and Mr. Molango scored and we suddenly thought we had discovered a sensation !
After that reality set in......and although he lasted a bit longer than most, I agree with Chesney that the vast majority of triallists seem to fall by the wayside.
I can only assume that they are recommended to the club and the first time that the coaching staff look at them is usually the last time.
