Across the Universe stands the test of time very well! The lyrics were considered by Lennon to be the best he'd written.

On February 4, 2008, at 00:00 UTC, NASA transmitted "Across The Universe" in the direction of the star Polaris, 431 light years from Earth. The transmission was made using a 70m antenna in the DSN's Madrid Deep Space Communication Complex, located outside of Madrid, Spain. It was done with an "X band" transmitter, radiating into the antenna at 18 KW.

This was done to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the song's recording, the 45th anniversary of the Deep Space Network (DSN), and the 50th anniversary of NASA. The idea was hatched by Beatles historian Martin Lewis, who encouraged all Beatles fans to play the track as it was beamed to the distant star. The event marked the second time a piece of music had been intentionally transmitted into deep space, and was approved by Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, and Apple Records (Wikipedia)

Rubbish.Music from the 60's isn't out dated.Has to be the best era for music ever.Early 80's is also superb. We don't have bands no more really just singers.

60s music is very dated, you cannot tell me that people on early Motown or Stax not to mention people like the early Who or Small Faces would be doing well now, tatstes have changed.

oh ok  i thought you were talking about john lennon's songs

Well he was the original discussion yes. However, as to how great he was is rather subjective. It is true he co wrote many classic and timeless tunes but so have a miriad of others.

Granted Lennon will be better remembered than most though.

Load of bollox. He had a unique voice and wrote probably one of the most famous songs of all time.He also wrote songs that were simply brilliant which doesn't sound out dated even now.

Firstly, thanks for your considered initial response.

Secondly, just because he wrote one of the most famous songs of all time, doesn't make him a great songwriter, period.

I love Lennon and McCartney and all the Beatles tracks apart fropm Old Brown Shoe.. and i know f*cking loads about The Beatles in general too. I just stated, IMO, that comparatively, there have been better songwriters per se.

Who do you think the Best songwriter of all time is? Lennon and Mccartney together?

They actually barely wrote together after 1965. But i'd put Dylan, Bowie, Simon and McCartney in at least the same ball park together.

But opinions mean sod all on this board these days!

Nope sure, nowhere in that I am saying he wasnt involved in writing some of the best pop songs you will ever hear. Its just the mindless cattle like reaction to Imagine that gets on my tits.

Well said, at best that song is mawkish sentimentality gone mad sung by a total hypocrite . NEVER trust a hippie

One of Smith & Jones's monologues always made me smile...

Mel..'When Mark Chapman shot John Lennon, he didn't kill one man, he killed a generation'

Griff..'He must have had a f***ing big gun then....'
