I have to say, I can’t help felling a little uncomfortable with grown men (?) championing a teeny boy Band.

And furthermore trying to compare them favorably to a great band from which a lot of music and band have evolved. Take that and The Beatles do not belong in the same sentence.

So the Beatles weren't a boy band?? I'm sure adults liked them as well or where they just a band for kids back then??

I wasn't around when they were, I wasn't born until 1972 but have had to listen to people say that they are the best ever since then, and a lot of people (maybe not the ones on here) just say this because of the murder. If he hadn't been shot people wouldn't talk about them half as much as they do now.

I do accept that musicians are influenced by them, Oasis for example (I only like one of their songs - Champagne Supernova). Even Take That have a Beatles influence in "Shine", no coincidence then that "Shine" is one of my least favourite Take That songs.

Yes but what you clearly don't understand is the impact they had at the time. I would be the first to admit that most of their stuff seems very dated now but so does Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and so on from days gone by. Few bands these days will be remembered in the same manner as the Beatles and their ilk becuase these days music is more to do with product. Even current huge bands like Oasis or REM are unlikely to have the same respect because what they do has been done before, guess who by ?

As I say I am not a huge Beatles fan but to call them 'overrated' shows a lack of knowledge of popular music.

Nope sure, nowhere in that I am saying he wasnt involved in writing some of the best pop songs you will ever hear. Its just the mindless cattle like reaction to Imagine that gets on my tits.

Maybe thats because it is one of the most beautiful popular pieces of music ever written do you think ?.

Are you referring to Robbie Williams? I don't care too much for him. He thought he was too big for the band and now is begging to come back.

I was thinking about Jim Morrison actually, had he have been murdered rather than committing suicide The Doors would be much more famous now than they are.

Morrison didn't commit suicide; he had a heart attack. I don't believe that he'd more famous today if had been murdered though. If anything, his death gave The Doors more mileage than they actually warranted.

And Chez, I think Spanish's post was referring to Syd Barrett as per your sig

Conversly it's also a misnomer that the Beatle's influence was to do with being original or innovators.

Their influence was in the form of taking what someone else pioneered and taking it to a larger audience.

Their influence is about being popular more so than being super talented or ground breaking.

A simple example is the use of a sitar type sound in a song.

The Beatles used it in Norwegian Wood to great effect, yet it was The Yardbirds who who used that style sound in "Heart Full of Soul" first followed very closely by The Kinks with "See My Friends".

Only someone who uis too young to have known the Beatles at their height would say that. You clearly have no idea what a revelation they were at the time. Their music has been copied by so many. I don't profess to be a Beatles fan but I can recognise the importance of both Lennon and McCartney in popular music today.

Frankly, if they're overrated what does that say for what came after ?

Now thats the best post of the day
seems to me this is a generational thing I loved all the Beatles songs and all of their contemporary groups and most if not all stand the test of time just look at those of my age when listening singing along word for word it was the most magical of times especially living in Brighton (how many of the NSC'ers remember the Starlight rooms or the Regent).

Must say this though some of the music around now is extremely good ..........but can't hold a candle to the Beatles era

Tastes change and music updates I know. Frankly I can't stand music from the 50s and the 60s now saounds very dated, a lot of this has to do with the technology that was available then as against what we have now. Speaking just about computers I can speak from personal experience of the changes in the last 30 years which, like musical technology is anything but linear.

Frankly most of what came out of the 70s was trash and very overrated (especially punk) and I also find the 80s rather bland overalll. The 90s seems to have spent a lot of it's time rehashing sounds and styles using better technology and frankly whilst there's a lot of good artists around now I can't really think of anybody who will be well remembered in 30 years time. As a matter of fact it's not at all hard to go straight in at no.1 now but back in the 60s this just didn't happen, right up until the Beatles arrived.

The Beatles are virtually immortal so whether you like them or not they are one of the few truly memorable acts and they would be at the top of that tree too.

Back then then teens needed there own culture, identity, music, hence why they they identified with the Beatles, the parent did not like them, but the kids did, happens in every generation, Adults are not supposed to like what the kids like & vice versa, otherwise it would not be rebellious.

The Beatles were a band, where as Take that are 4 singers, The Beatles actually played the music that accompanies the lyrics,

I'm aware that TT are able to play instruments but not to a standard required hence why they used session musicians, they are singers , not a band.

Gary Barlow plays the piano brilliantly. I'll give you the other 3, excellent voices but granted don't play instruments.

Rubbish.Music from the 60's isn't out dated.Has to be the best era for music ever.Early 80's is also superb. We don't have bands no more really just singers.
