Fawcett in the 80's definatley above Longhill and on a par with Falmer and Deason.

I don't think so - we (Fawcett) got tonked a few times about then by Falmer

Would say

Falmer followed by Deason, then Stringer/Fawcett/Longhill
wih Varndean a distant 6th..

In the 1970's Stringer always thought they were harder than the Varndean toffs. In those days it was normally just a fight between the schools two hardest. I remember one lad , Gus , whose brother was in my year , lamped the Stringer kiddie just once and he went down like a sack of potatoes.

Was that Gus Dutton? A total nutter. He was pretty much the hardest kid in Varndean. I think he got expelled.

I remember Stringer being pretty hairy. We had to go on cross country runs past Stringer and accept that you were going to have stones/bricks etc bunged at you. I remember get hit my a big chunk of brick on my knee, limping over the finishing line in 70th place and getting a detention for my lowly finish. Bastard Stringer.

Mate dont get me started on those stringer vs varndean snowball fights. A stringer girl beat up one of the varndeans hardest lads, and there was one kid from stringer that every one in varndean was scared of.

So did Fawcett....knocked down in 1990. Probably agree with Rowdey....just behind deason and Falmer but ahead of Stringer,Longhill and Varndean!!

I was at Fawcett 75-79. First year it was comprehensive so rest of the school full of secondary mod. nuts. Remember getting smacked in the gut for no reason, and having to stand up to bullies trying to extort dinner money. I hated it at the time but it made me more streetwise and made the rest of my life subsequently seem better. Legends of fights with Stringer - boys getting hauled up in assembly to 'shame' them when it made them into heroes. Remember Wilcox as PE teacher - he was a good bloke and a maths teacher who looked like Ben Elton and probably saved my academic and therefore work life. Gargan boys were the hardest I remember there, also Glen Geard who was a bit older and went on to play a couple of games for the Albion.

Falmer had the reputation as the roughest at that time. If it was rougher than Fawcett then God help them. I think Lush was head girl at the time!

Bastard nothing. We were just normal Stringer kids doing normal Stringer stuff.

I got a 'B+' for 'O' Level Brick Lobbing, thank you very much.

brighton, actually
Stringer 78-82.

considering Varndean had older students than Stringer, and had a higher position, I think we put up a good fight whenever the two clashed.

Fawcett (I think) seemed to be the biggest rival, though i never saw bad thing happen.. though I had also seen some in-house bundles and scraps that got a bit nasty, until the teachers steamed in to break it up.

Personally I was hed upside down over a flight of stairs by two bullies.. imagine what they do to non-Stringerers!
thankfully they had a strong grip, or i'd be doing a Stephen Hawkin right now..

As it looked like a massive bundle was going to kick off the teachers arrived and seperated the two factions. In the early to mid 70's the Varndean boys used to stand at the back of the North Stand directly behind the goal.

I'm sure it was a girls school in the 70's ? you shouldn't fight with girls !

Yes. I always imagined that after leaving school he became a mercenary as this would match his profile.

Indeed it was! I think the boys were allowed in in 78 or 79. However , the girls were hard as nails:ohmy:

Of course the other Varndean was the boys grammar until about 1976 when it became the sixth form college
I was at Varndean Grammar (Boys) which became mixed in about 1973 and when the site became a 6th form college the school transferred over to the site of Varndean Grammar (Girls).

Glen Geard is the same age as me and was on the the Albion's books at the same time as youth goalie Paul Hubbard (ex Varndean). Unfortunately they never made it career wise at pro level but were decent players. The last I heard of Paul was that he was living in Spain.
