He was ill at the end of last season, but I don't think that's remotely close enough to being reason enough to sack him.

Probably doing much the same as MM did, still getting paid by us instead of a lump sum compensation for dismisal so is not fussed about finding another job until that stops and the 'right' job comes up for him. Just doing scouting etc to keep in with people and the game in general for when that time comes as MA did with Stoke after leaving Colchester.
