Seems a scary move for me. Vaughan has been struggling for runs, but part of the reason why I never saw this coming was that we had absolutely no half decent alternative as captain.
KP in charge, has a lot of the inherant problems that Flintoff in charge brought. A talisman of a player, but a leader? I can't see it. We have one World class batsman in our line-up, who every side in the World has to worry about, so we have now heaped a whole load of pressure on his shoulders. Oh great, that should help.

The big difference between Pietersen and Flintoff is that he hasn't got his own bowling to factor into the equation.
Flintoff always had his own status as the bowling TALISMAN at the back of his mind when he was captaining the side. Pietersen has none of this baggage and can concentrate on his captaincy in the field without worrying if he should be bowling.
Time will tell if his form suffers but his performance in the press conference would seem to indicate that he is RELISHING the challenge.

Quite true. The added problem with Flintoff was that he needed to be getting fired up for a bowling spell rather than worrying about whether Hoggard should have a third man etc.
But KP is very much an individual, who is a superb player, and a good mate to all the players - as was Flintoff. There are times the bowlers need a kick up the backside, to fire them up, to be told they are not performing well enough. I saw Vaughan do that on a few occasions, but could never see Flintoff dishing it out, and likewise I can't see KP doing it. When it comes to batting, words there tend to happen in the dressing room, so you can't see it going on, but the captain does need to ensure that his batsmen are playing the right way, responsible sensible, batting for the team, paying attention to the game situation when making their shot selection. That's gonna be difficult for the batsman to take from a man who switch hits, and looks for a glory 6 to bring up his 100 when we are needing to bat and bat to get back into a pivotal test.
Don't get me wrong, I love his batting and I don't want him to change it by much. In fact, that could be an problem, in that he may feel he has to reign himself in a bit, and I think that would take away an important aspect of his game.

Not really. His mother is English, his father is South African, so I make him as entitled to play for England as he is South Africa ..... and good on him for taking a stance on the ridiculous positive racism that was brought into the SA selection policy.
Actually I think he's more English than the last South African we has as captain (Tony Greig for those of you not around in the 1970s).
I think KP's the 'least worst' candidate out of those available. At least it wasn't Flintoff.
He's scored more runs in fewer innings in the County Championship this year.
