not sure what the set up is, but I thought it was on its own machine now, dunno how it cant handle a couple of hundred users. Been on forums with 3000+ users no problem which aint that big either really

whats NSC got, maybe a few million records? REINDEX the tables or something!!

Feel free to send a cash donation towards the support and maintainance of the site. 1p per post by you only makes it about £80. Bargain.

I think it makes it just over £25 actually.

Fair comment though, I will pledge a contribuition to the site come pay day at the end of the month, well worth a contribution which I aint done before

Bozza, I wasnt cirticising, apologies if it came over that way!! fair play for the running this site for free, it does a pretty decent job. My only point was that its not THAT busy a site which shouldnt be able to handle the small amount of users it has, I'd be surprised if it was totally server hardware based more database tuning/performance

A vBulletin messageboard, on which NSC runs, with 200-300 concurrent users is pretty resource hungry. People skipping about the board generates a lot of SQL to be run. vBulletin is largely self-optimizing and all tables are indexed appropriately etc.

I'm well aware that there are some messageboards that are far busier with some, such as Digitalspy, running with a few thousand concurrent users at times.

However most of those boards enjoy some or all of:

- High advertising revenues
- Sponsorship
- User donations

By and large, NSC has none of these. That is why those mega-boards are able to spend serious amounts of cash on kit and hosting and we currently make do on a relatively low-powered dedicated server that costs £80 a month.

A new, more powerful server is being built and I hope when we move to it users see far fewer (or, hopefully, no) 'server busy' messages.

I'm very open about NSC's finances. If you've not seen it before, look here:

http://www.northstandchat.com/forumdisplay.php?f=36

£2300 may look a tidy sum to have in the bank, and I guess it is. But if I pushed the boat out a bit and spent £200 a month on hosting and the advertising revenue dried up, then that money would soon run out and NSC would be in trouble. It's a fine balance to try and get right.

I don't want to have to take user donations and hopefully it will never come to that. If people use the affiliate ads to make their purchases (see the Play.com and Amazon etc ads at the top) then that helps NSC. If a user sees an advert of interest from Google in the top right, then clicking on that helps NSC. (We generally serve up around 50,000 pages a day and get around 10-15 clicks!)

I'll be using the Google links if I need anything and try to make a contribution that way.

Wasn;t having a pop at you Maffew really, it was just my heavy handed way of saying "well done Bozza - maybe we should appreciate the free-ness of NSC a bit more".

Peace and love and three points everyone!

And As for the iritating message I got today from the board

"Hello Wanderer it appears that you have not posted on our forums in several weeks, why not take a few moments to ask a question, abuse Crystal Palace or just engage in a conversation with everyone else on the Big Board?"

Well, I REALLY wanted to post after the Mansfield match as it was a milestone for me, the first time my twin boys (4yr olds) saw Brighton play, but of course the board was down at that time, and stole my thunder somewhat
