Today of all days.

Woken at 5am by loud squealing noise (not the kids they are 23 and 21) but a seized pump in the heating system.

Called British Gas (insurance policy) after a few questions they said an engineer would be here today.....I hope so... its not minus 5 outside so its not to bad.

Keep u posted on how long British Gas take... .......a small consumer report..

HAPPY CHRISTMAS.....

(glad the pump went wrong today, I'm away on hols tomorrow)

I had the gas people digging up the pavement outside my house last night, it's difficult to sleep with the sound of drills outside your bedroom window.

Hope he has the parts with him on the van , otherwise he wont be able to do the job until after you return from holiday. I have my boiler insured with Homeserve which also includes an annual service. I was due to have it serviced in October and rang their call centre to arrange it as they dont seem to remind you anymore. They told me to ring back after 5pm if the engineer hadn't turned up on the day only to find out the office dealing with engineer call outs closes at 5pm. The following day I wasn't in the best of moods having stayed in on my day off and waited 25 minutes in the queue to speak to an advisor. They couldn't give me a reason why the engineer hadn't turned up or hadn't taken the courtesy to ring me. The next available service callout was on Nov 17th - when the chap turned up he said that it was probably another cock up in the call centre and the visit hadn't been booked on to the system (October's service call) so therefore it wouldn't be on his worksheet.

Result,

Rang at 0900 (ish) Gas man here at 1010, was not the pump but a stuck ball valve (so the system had run dry)...all fixed now..

But British gas do keep telling me to change my boiler as its old.

Is it a sales pitch or could there genuinely be no parts left if the boiler went wrong?

Any gas men there?

Excellent result. The engineer will tell you that the boiler needs replacing if it is more than 10 years old as this is upselling. Once the boiler model becomes discontinued the spare parts are normally made/kept for the next 7 years so after 10 years there is a possibility the spare parts are no longer available. As a new boiler will be quite expensive the engineer recommending the replacement is bound to be on a commission.

Chop up the kitchen table and put the logs in the grate. Light match.

Watch out for the Fire Brigade if you haven't called the chimney sweep in the last year or so. .
