Russia are probably quite happy to have a few hoolie headlines. It might deflect some attention from the pitch issue.

But what am I saying, they're not the sort of country to get a few ex-KGB men to do something underhand like that.

Two great quotes here

"British football fans get drunk and provoke conflicts themselves "

and

"impression they had gone to Moscow "simply in order to drink and amuse themselves in clubs".

Yevgeny Gildeyev
Moscow deputy police chief

Sometimes it really amazes me that our "fans" go to games like this.

i am sure some people have a death wish.

my mate who travells with me from Portslade in the mornings hasnt missed an england game for years and follows the albion all over the country with his son and he is giving this game a wide berth!

Each to their own.

I guess the majority have not been to Russia and most of the time there is little to no problems.

Also why are you describing the supporters as "fans"? Are you implying they are not there for the football?

All depends on where they go.

Well, I've banned them from brothels, strip clubs, lap dancing venues, casinos and drug dens. I just hope that Dandyman is the sensible, cultural influence on the outings. I'm hoping they do the museum and art gallery thing.
I'm feeling a lot worse after we had a lecture on football violence and disasters on Tuesday.

So you do not know about the hotel then?

There is something great about watching England away in a qualifier or big tournament, something that if you haven't ever done it, you won't get.

Potentially this is a match, like Istanbul or Rome, where we clinch qualification. It would be superb to see that live.

But Russia is like the Wild West at the moment, and even a few regulars must have had second thoughts, as Gaffer says. You'd prefer to survive the experience.

What would have stopped me going to this game (had I been in with a shout) was that if you don't think you can safely walk round the city and take in the sights, it's just not worth it.

They will be fine. Seems it is a tad lively, but just find a bar, get a cab to the ground and when they let them out, stay in a decent sized group, back to the hotel and keep the bar open all night.

I hope you're right. I do worry about my little boy. I can't keep tabs on him like I usually do due to the extortionate roaming charges.

The Russians don't like us and if we win they get knocked out. All that and it's fukking cold. Even if we get the right result it will not be easy to celebrate without attracting the wrong sort of attention.

Exactly.

I was in Poland in 89 when we qualifeid for Italia 90 - crap game (0-0) but it was enough to see us through - Poland actually hit the bar with about 5 minutes to go as Shilts just stood there beaten.

It was just great to see the team Qualify, although there were some 'interesting' scenes afterwards that night too.
