Try and get a seat above the black box.

It's not the flying that worries me, it's the bit where the plane is plummeting in flames to the ground.

I used to be scared of flying, but now don't mind it all.

I hate being in a motorway in car, really hate it and go out of my way to avoid being in one. Travelling over 60 miles an hour in a small metal box doesn't agree with at all.

The car fear probably came from a big truck hitting me on the elephant and castle roundabout over ten years ago, seconds before my arm was hanging out the window and as I pulled it in a huge truck smashed into the side of the car.

.. and that's really how I got over the fear of flying - I realised that actually it's relatively safe.

You are more likely to die from your Trousers than you are from flying.

FACT:thumbsup:

Yep, statistically you have more chance of being kicked to death by a donkey and it's certainly a lot better than going by road. I'd be careful about the drink though as airlines are getting very hot on passengers who over imbibe. I fly periodically both business and pleasure and see it as a nessesary evil.

However, when looking for that 'Black Box' remember that it's actually bright orange.

I don't like flying now... and I've flown loads over the years, had a few near misses, runways missed, gone of the end sort of stuff....

But sadly I have to grin and bear it, I know for a fact turbulence has never made a plane crash - its just bloody uncomfortable, I know the pilot wants to survive as well, and I know exactly hour many minutes hours and second til I land - thanks to those god awful maps which I have to stare at for all 24 hours of every flight I do...I get chest pains, I get headaches I have panic attacks - all sorts!

Short story is that its a phobia - usually about not being in control, and being cooped up. Talk to your phobia like it is a person, strangely enough works for me. I tell him to piss off and go bother someone else. Not to ruin my holiday/trip/life...

I've never much liked flying mainly for the bordedom factor - apart from the flight time itself, you just spend all frigging day waiting, clockwatching and queuing. I do get a little anxious on the plane at takeoff and landing, but I'm reassured by the fact that the flight crews do it day-in, day out for a living, so it MUST be pretty safe. And half of them are mincers as well, and they don't run around shrieking or anything.

I hate flying also and cannot speak to anyone prior to take off. I'm usually alright once the service trolley comes round and I have a bottle of red. I constantly monitor the flight attendants for any sign of trouble.

I used to be a lot worse but there is a fear of flying forum but I also find doing some kind of research into the aircraft I will be flying on etc helps.

I know it sounds weird but I actually get some kind of comfort from watching air crash investigation

Can anyone explain to me why - when seats have already been allocated - people rush to be at the front of the queue to board a plane? All that happens is that you get to your seat in time for dozens of people to be milling around you, looking for their seats, or leaning over you, looking for space in an overhead locker.

And why do people stand up and start retrieving their hand baggage from the overhead racks as soon as the plane comes to a standstill after landing? Does this make your bag reach the carousel any earlier?

Last on, last off is my watchword. It's so much calmer.

Quite often before it has come toa standstill and the announcers have to say about it.

You're right LB except on Ryanair you do actually treat it like a bus and take whichever seat(s) are available.

And on the flip side of that, why is there always at least one complete and utter cackbadger that despite repeated "This is the last call for flight number..." is still ambling through the duty free shop when they should be sat on the bloody plane!

And don't even get me started about babies on aeroplanes........

Safest way of travel, you are WAY more likely to get run over/crash etc than crash in a plane.

I go flying quite often in a helicopter, one time flying to Amsterdam and I am still here.

Stop ya yapping, think of the end result, a nice destination. Unless you are flying to Albania.

Because the English love a que. It does my head in!

I like pre booking/checking in on line with Eastjet and always end up being caled first. Then watch all the knobs get turned away thinking cos' they have a lap top and a suit they can get on first. Your not on BA now pal, you pay for what you get......back of the que...ASSHOLE!

These are the same sort of people who miss their fights because of traffic/late trains/bad weather/industrial action/couldn't park (and so on) who then say it's the airline's fault and that the air;ine should lay on a new plane/put them in a hotel/give a full refund as compensation and so on !

Sit at the back of the plane, how often have you seen a plane reverse into a mountain??? and take comfort from the fact your life jacket is fitted with a light and a whistle just in case your plane crashes into a disco.

The first 34,999.99 feet are easy. The last half inch is a major problem.
