Fantastic footage of Ward in his prime
I know I'm biased, but aspects of his goal at about 1:20 on that video are simply incredible...

WHY do the two defenders about to tackle him suddenly peel away to cover some imagined threat behind and to the left? One can only suppose that some subtle false cue from the great man was responsible...

That is, quite wonderful.

The shame is that there were not really many moments from those days, captured on film. The couple that may still exist of Peter Ward's time, are sparse, poor quality, and barely hint at the true story. It's a bit like having the works of Tchaikovsky disappear - except for three or four smudged lines of music to be uncovered.

For those who were not around to witness the brilliance, and know why we got so excited about it whenever the skinny, spritely fellow got the ball, I feel a bit sad.
Also, that the proofs are only in memories, and we can't revisit them on a screen as tangible uneffected evidences in all the glory, as they happened.

At least we did see those magical moments though.

I remember when we were in the old third division, oppositions used to send on some short round moron substitute on, specifically to crock Ward - because he was, as usual, running rings round their defences and embarrassing the crap out of their prized players! I usually gave them about 5 minutes before they got booked or sent off.
There'd be times when a team would have THREE players on Wardy, and they'd try pinning him into a corner, or surround him and the ball. Funny to see their faces when they were looking to see where their 'prisoner' had gone, taking the ball with him.
:shrug::shrug::shrug: .............. :wave:

He often ran round whole defences leaving top defenders on their arses...... before he shot, and scored :clap2: :yahoo: :bowdown:

He had such fast feet, he could draw a foul like nobody I have seen, before or since.

I suspect a lot of defenders started seeing ghosts, muttering in corners of rooms, and having to get serious psychotherapy after playing against Ward. In fact, here are some actual pictures of players who tried to get the ball off him;
:O :thud: :shootself :annoyed: :cry: :p :moo: :cheery:

and he was fouled from behind, the sides and right through him. I am convinced he would have been World Class is today's game because he would have got protection from the ref and the rules have changed to benefit skillful palyers. In the lower divisions he was nearly always too quick but in the top division there were defenders fast enough to track back and whack him or get to him as the ball arrived and whack him. It told in the end as fear entered his game, understandably.

These could be the muses of an older fan with rose tinted specs but he was "the real McCoy" imo and I very much doubt we'll see his like in the stripes again.

I'm afraid that cynical fouls are still supported and encouraged by refs on the international scene. If johnny foreigner cannot get the ball off a Rooney or Owen, they have myriad ways of cheating, and even seeing if it'll work to get a player sent off.
When they know they can't get the ball, they cheat. Refs don't even give them a yellow, and send off a Beckham or a Rooney for any retaliation, thus handing the game to the perpetrators and effectively resigning England from the tournaments.

Sometimes, much as we hate to see it, playing poor victim and going to ground is the players' better option.

He was the epitome and meaning of the word 'enigma'. Just incredible natural talent.
Not like Ronaldo even, who is very good at tricks, but instinctual ability to keep the ball, change direction before the defender has time to think, and wind a path to the goal with ball stuck to his toes.
Beyond credible, the 'Jimi Hendrix' of football!

That was the York game, shown on MoTD. Quite incredible game, 2-2 at half time then, i believe, the change of Binney for Mellor saw the start of that prolific partnership and a f/t score of 7-2.

That goal was in the 1st half. i was in the North Stand (where the goal was scored) and still cannot beieve that goal. Wardy picked the ball up with back to goal and 2 defenders behind him. In a flash he was goalside of these defenders and the ball was heading for the net. Pure magic. He had only played about a dozen games by then but we knew we had something special.

That york goal is just about my fav but another that sticks in the memory, and runs on from the views above, is a goal he scored at The Den.

For a small fella, Wardy could not be intimidated. The old Den was a scary place and Millwall's veteran centre half was Barry Kitchener the archtypal centre half of old. He was big & mean, a bully and nasty peice of work (on the pitch, at least). If anyone was going to sort out this young upstart then it would be him.....

Kitchener was chasing shadows all afternoon. Wardy teased & tormented, like one of those boxers who duck's & dives and just keeps out of reach of a lunge. Then Wardy got the ball, back to goal and about 25 yards out, kitchener closes from behind.........

Wadrly flicks the ball up and over his, & Kitheners head and spins around the gorrilla. Kitch is left stranded, Wardy's sprinting through and the only goal of the match is in the bag, classic!

He knew how to use a moving ball's momentum to get both around a defender, without having to stop the ball first and have to make things happen from a static start again.
Despite the fact we did have some very good players on the pitch with him, The Albion would still have only been an 'okay' team if it were without Peter Ward.

have to admit that the way he won that penalty on Saturday was vintage Ward imo.

I remember stainding in the North Stand gettign that buzz as he roared into the penalty area. You just knew he was either going to score, or that they would hack himn down and it would be a penalty ... they were the only teo possible outcomes!!
