As the thread's been bounced, I'll add a couple of lovelies... sadly both no longer with us.
A work colleague once met Sir Bobby Robson on a train journey from Newcastle to London (colleague joined the train at Durham and found himself sitting opposite Sir Bobby). He tentatively said hello and just asked if he thought England had any chance of winning the upcoming international competition (must have been the 2004 Euros) expecting a "yes I think we'll do quite well" but actually had a very extensive chat about the ins and outs of football.
Going back further (to the 1970s/80s) I had the pleasure of meeting TUC Gen Sec Len Murray on several occasions - a very pleasant, kind, gentle man.
