[Music] Most over-rated albums

Surprised nobody else has started this, so here we are:

1. Born in the USA: Bruce Springsteen. Enjoyed it and still do, but he made plenty better before in particular.
2. Brothers in Arms: Dire Straits. Not a patch on Making Movies and others from before.
3. Bridge over Troubled Water: Simon and Garfunkel. Same pattern.

I was and remain a fan of all three but would say that all made it really big worldwide when their most commercial albums were released.

Think after the Beatles, Bowie is the most important, talented uk artist with the most significant output, but I've never loved ZS and the spiders from Mars. I'm probably wrong though.

Pet Sounds is my top three, but no need for armour - music is a very personal experience and I never ever knock anyone else’s tastes just because they don’t match my own

I love it as I first listened to it properly when I was 17, and the themes struck big chords with me at the time.
I could understand though that it might not have touched me if I’d first listened to it now, aged 49.

I agree. My Dad was Bowie mad, Hunky Dory was the wonderful album always played.

Blue is a wonderful album.

My opinion of course.

As for Bono and the Boys, I agree totally.

By most commercial, I think you mean best. None of these albums was overrated. These artists made other great albums for sure, but the ones you mention are when the act got everything right. Through the lens of time and perhaps over familiarity it may seem otherwise, but over rated they aren't.

I've always had a blind spot when it comes to Steely Dan. The critics rave about them as solid gold classics but every one leaves me completely cold: brilliantly played, slick and smooth as they come ... but just sterile to me

I think DSOTM is an interesting one.

It's my favourite album of all time and I think every second of it is a masterpiece which needs to be listened to as a whole.

But I also get how someone simply wouldn't get it. I don't think it's a "oh that's a nice tune in the background" album. I decide to sit down and fully engage in listening to it which is as twatty is it sounds but it's the truth. I won't choose one song from it, it has to be the whole thing.

At uni me and a housemate used to regularly play Mario Kart with the sound turned down, listening to his Pink Floyd box set.

These occasions remain the only time I've successfully listened to Dark Side of the Moon all the way through without falling asleep.

I do like it, to be clear.

By most commercial, I mean most commercial, so no, I don't mean best as my comments I thought made clear. The ones I mentioned were overrated in my opinion; clearly not in yours. Fair enough. Still opinions though and not facts.

Tough one this. I'll spare you all further comment on the Beatles, or my huge dislike of Queen. Can't agree with the nomination of Bat Out of Hell. It was panned by the critics and has risen above that because it's huge fun. Few songwriters can match Jim Steinman for a sense of humour, that's very rare in songs that aren't specifically comic.

Tempted by 'Rumours', but I think that's unfair as although it's a style of music that I'm not keen on, it's probably the pinnacle of that style. I'll settle on 'Thriller'. I like 'Off The Wall', but found the follow up far less funky, far less interesting and took a dislike because it was just ubiquitous and every critic fell on their knees in front of it.
