It’s amazing what a modicum of skill, a healthy bank balance and a crazy amount of self publicity can get you these days. To be fair, once he had built his empire and got over himself a little, he has actually done some good In some quarters.
As others have said, there have been worse candidates and there will be worse to come.

I like Dave (despite all his faults)
Me too.
I have said it before and will say it again.
My favourite ever England player.
And I go all the way back to 1966.

That's completely tarnished the fantastic honour system that has been at the heart of Britain's respectable Imperial Royal legacy.
No it hasn't. It hasn't been 'a fantastic honour system' for years. Far too many Sirs and all the other odds and sods of the British Empire - thousands of them - have devalued the whole system. It's been broken for generations.
To be fair, there are plenty of worse candidates (and previous recipients)
Exactly. Thousands of 'em! Beckham seems to be a good bloke, and has certainly done alright for himself - but should he be made a Sir? Like many other Sirs before him, the answer's no.

Silly old bat
Indeed. Even in football, where Geoff Hurst got a knighthood pretty much for simply being a good replacement for Jimmy Greaves in 1966.
To be fair, scoring a hat trick in the World Cup final is pretty special, least of all scoring it against the Germans. ⚽⚽⚽

I opened this thinking I might be in the minority but it seems split 50/50 on whether he should get one or not.
I say no, and taking the money from Saudi land to say how good they are there was the icing that made me detest him even more.
He may well give a lot to charity, we don't know, but it's where that money comes from that taints it for me.

Yes, true enough. In the olden days according to the stories people have been given half the kingdom and the hand of the princess in marriage for doing less!

I don't mind him, live your life, whatever, but his obsessive need to hoover up cash at any cost is bizarre. He will advertise and promote pretty much anything if the money is right.
I think it's because you can buy nice things with money.

I’m throughly enjoying this thread. It’s hilarious how frothy mouthed people become at Beckhams’ name. The ranting over something so trivial is hugely entertaining. Please carry on.
I heard SIR Gary Lineker is also being knighted in a ceremony where the BBC Licence Fee is being presented with UNESCO status. Should be universally applauded all round.

Nothing against Beckham but unless someone like Botham who raised a fortune for charity against sports people getting honours. Entertainers as well. again unless like Elton John

Unfortunately a system often used to reward toadying and back handers. Absolutely devalues the awards given to decent people. He became a member of the shooting clique to get on.

Modicum of skill? He was a bit better than that - if you happen across highlights from Utd in the late 90s/early 2000s he was unbelievable. Couldn’t beat a man but never needed to.
