You get the usual knobheads just like at every club, but most of the ones I know are proper doom and gloom merchants. As long as the beat Newcastle and score more than 12 points then anything else is a bonus next season.
Yep, my Sunderland supporting mate is delighted but says they are shite. He’s as stunned as anyone that they are up there.

What I can’t stand is when Shearer bleats on about people from the north east being “hard working people”, like the rest of us aren’t.

They all work in digital and life sciences now Alan! They ain’t down the pit anymore.
Coming from the North I think it’s sort of a badge of honour some wear to say we’ve got in tougher than most, in reality Sunderland is no different from many seaside towns and cities apart from its cold in the summer and outside of Peterlee no one can understand a word we say with our accents

On the flip side if you visit and treat the locals with respect you’ll get a genuine warm welcome and I’ll say it again the coastline heading North is beautiful.

I’ve heard a lot about the coastline and only ever seen it from the train.

As for the warm welcome, I’m sure the people can be as warm and welcoming as people from anywhere. People are people.

I lived in Yorkshire for five years and I can safely say the warm welcome was lukewarm the second they found you were thinking of staying.

Only been to Sunderland once in the late 1990s as it was desperately seeking to transition industries. It certainly felt run down then.

Yet I lived in Yorkshire for three years and the locals couldn't have been more friendlier!! Despite quite a few of them being Leeds fans

The ground (Sunderland) is a good one, went 20 years ago plus for a Sunderland vs Newcastle derby game. They are passionate about their football 'up there' but aren't we also down here? Does my head in when the press talk about 'football hotbeds' and it somehow means more to NorthEast football fans

The north west is the true football hotbed if there is such a thing: loads of smaller clubs from relatively very small towns like Burnley (90kish) getting around 20k attendances when they are so close to the two Manchester and Liverpool clubs plus a whole host of other smaller towns with professional clubs is hugely impressive

The reason Newcastle and Sunderland get especially large attendances is simply (and obviously) cos the north east is relatively far away from anywhere else, so everyone in the cities as well as surrounding towns only have those few teams to follow

Even down here we have all the london clubs up the road to compete with, and a significant % of the population of Sussex are ex londoners who have brought their allegiances with the

If you’re actually from Sunderland, Red in Peace, how come you’re a Forest fan not a Mackem?

Because my head isn’t just for hats 😉, long story short as a boy my father looked like one of the Forest players, bizarre turn of events led to me experiencing some mad days following Forest, unsure if you’ve seen the book “Be good, love Brian” written by my childhood friend Craig Bromfield but if you get a chance you’ll learn about a pretty special time, some would say off the charts enough to be a work of fiction but it’s a true story I can tell you as I was there.

Thanks - I loved Cloughie and the thing he achieved at Derby and Forest where the sum of the team’s talents was far greater than the individual players.
I’m lucky in that I support the team from the town(now city) where I was born😊

I’ve often thought about “what if” Peter loved Brighton, if Brian and Peter had spent a couple of season on the south coast it could have been Albion and not Forest who had a purple patch, or a blue and white stripes patch might be more appropriate.

Tbf it was Peter who began our progress imo - he was the one who fancied Wardy as a player and he was the catalyst for our first rise to the top division

Outside of Forest Peter doesn’t get the credit he deserves, he was the brains behind the operation, he could pick a player from a mile away, I’m glad we have the Peter Taylor Stand at City Ground, a lasting legacy to a great football man.

Right next to the Stadium - what we should have done tbh when planning the Amex.

(Will cost a fortune on match days no doubt)

It's a shame the idea of building a hotel next to the Amex didn't get past the planning stage.

It was for sure Peter Taylor who began it. Twas a poor Easter period that cost us promotion in 75/76.

Interesting that you mention it’s cold in the summer.

Back in the 80s I had a mate who went to Sunderland Poly to study Fine Art. I went to stay for a weekend in June, hitching up on the Friday in glorious, warm sunshine.

This weather lasted until Sunderland city limits - on entering the place the temperature dropped by about ten degrees, and there was a heavy mist.

This weather persisted all weekend.

On the Monday, I set off to hitch home again. As soon as I got out of Sunderland, the mist disappeared and there were glorious blue skies with warm sunshine, all the way home.

😎

Sounds about right, when you stand on the beach if you can’t see then end of the pier it must be raining and if you can then it’s about to start.

Roker Park was always a cold ground with the prevailing North East wind battering the open terrace and across the stands it wasn’t a place youd ever need sunblock.
