Having re-read the article and seen that the deadline has passed this may have a chance of coming to pass.
Allez PSG!
Allez PSG!
whilst the meltdown by the hoodie clad ultra schoolboys would be hilarious, I actually wouldn't want Palace to miss out because of this. Like it or not, they are in the Europa League by merit. It would be better if they fail miserably ,dont qualify for knockout and don't get a point in the first stages.and the Forest owner had to do something this year to avoid a clash with Olympiacos. You'd like to think these owners, especially TB, wouldn't sit back and allow this to be overlooked. UEFA had a 1st March deadline for a reason........
I do. I cannot imagine a more hilarious way for them to miss out.whilst the meltdown by the hoodie clad ultra schoolboys would be hilarious, I actually wouldn't want Palace to miss out because of this. Im sure it will be worked out if necessary , but its going to set UEFA a headache they don't want as it will set precedent, and possibly leave them open for legal action from TB, Villa and Forest
Crystal Palace & Lyon – UEFA Conflict Summary
- Both clubs share ownership links via John Textor (Eagle Football Holdings).
- UEFA prohibits two clubs with shared control from competing in the same European competition (Article 5).
- Both Palace and Lyon are on track to qualify for the 2025–26 Europa League.
- UEFA’s deadline to restructure ownership/control passed in March 2025.
- Textor did not divest or reduce control in either club in time.
Why Palace will likely be excluded:
- UEFA precedent: When conflict exists, the club from the lower-ranked league or non-league route (like FA Cup) is removed.
- Lyon plays in Ligue 1, which ranks higher than Palace’s FA Cup route.
- 2023 example: AC Milan kept their spot; Toulouse (owned by same group) was banned.
- Palace’s Europa League qualification via cup win is less favoured than Lyon’s via league position.
Likely outcome:
Crystal Palace will be banned from the Europa League unless UEFA makes a surprise exception — which it has never done in similar cases.
Let me know if you want this phrased for social media or a club forum post.
Haha, there is a line in this article "The rules have been relaxed slightly, as explained by The Athletic in 2024, so UEFA may allow Palace into the Conference League, Europe’s third-tier tournament, even if the above criteria are not satisfied. "
But there would be a spare Europa League space available for the next highest placed side...............?Haha, there is a line in this article "The rules have been relaxed slightly, as explained by The Athletic in 2024, so UEFA may allow Palace into the Conference League, Europe’s third-tier tournament, even if the above criteria are not satisfied. "
which obviously means that we will initially get the Conference League place with Chelsea finishing 7th and winning the thing, and then have it taken away by Palace being awarded it instead.
Because thats just how the universe likes to laugh at us somehow........

Sadly no, they both played in the Europa League that season. Is that ChatGPT thing above correct about Milan and Toulouse?
If it's the same thing, surely Palace are screwed if PSG win the cup? Precedent is right there?
- 2023 example: AC Milan kept their spot; Toulouse (owned by same group) was banned.
There's only ever two Europa League spots, 6th and Cup winners / 7th in the league. So Chelsea get one of thoseBut there would be a spare Europa League space available for the next highest placed side...............?
Yup - https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-cleared-europe-uefa-multi-club-ties-toulouseSadly no, they both played in the Europa League that season.
Wrong, I'm afraid. I would love Palace to miss out for this reason. It would be brilliant.whilst the meltdown by the hoodie clad ultra schoolboys would be hilarious, I actually wouldn't want Palace to miss out because of this. Like it or not, they are in the Europa League by merit. It would be better if they fail miserably ,dont qualify for knockout and don't get a point in the first stages.
Toulouse stake went into a blind trust for a year overseen by UEFA.Yup - https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-cleared-europe-uefa-multi-club-ties-toulouse
Brighton, Aston Villa and Toulouse have been cleared by Uefa to play in European competitions next season despite their owners having ties to other clubs who qualified.
However Uefa prohibited the partner clubs – Brighton and Union Saint-Gilloise; Villa and Vitória Guimarães; Toulouse and Milan – from exchanging players via sales or loans before the end of the summer transfer window next year.
The governing body noted the “significant changes by the clubs and their related investors” to comply with the rules that “substantially restrict the investors’ influence and decision-making power over more than one club”.
Brighton can make their European debut in the Europa League after persuading Uefa’s club finance panel that their owner, Tony Bloom, does not also have decisive influence at Union, who are in the Europa League qualifying playoffs.
Aston Villa’s owners reduced their stake last week in the Portuguese club Vitória and both teams will enter qualifying rounds for the Europa Conference League.
The French Cup winners, Toulouse, go into the Europa League despite ties to the American investment firm RedBird Capital Partners, which owns the Champions League team Milan
Doesn't say what Milan and Toulouse did to reduce their investors influence and decision-making power
I guess when one of your clubs is so shit you think there's literally no chance of them ever qualifying for Europe, you don't take the necessary steps to ensure the conflict of interest is resolved.
Yeah this is not good news. I'd hoped that if he was forced to choose which darling to murder it would be Palace as his Lyon investment is considerably larger and therefore a presence on the European stage would help drive a better marketable commodity than Palace.I think it's also complicated by the fact that Lyon have been relegated (for the purposes of which French league they play in next season). It seems that, in order to play in Europe next season (whether Europa League or Conference) they need to demonstrate their finances are in order - and basically need to sell loads of players pronto. If they can't do so, then they won't be able to play in Europe next season, and the Palace issue won't be relevant.
If all those results go our way and we qualify for Ucol within the pre laid out regulations.Well that was fun while it lasted.........
Excellent, I can now grab back a hold of those straws I just chucked outIf all those results go our way and we qualify for Ucol within the pre laid out regulations.
There's no way they could take the place earned by us within the stated rules and hand it to Palace who violated other UEFA EL rules.
Thar would be a legal challenge.
