Might want to check the Israeli entry's back story. It'll give a clue why folk warmed to her.
I’m sure there are some nice people in Russia. They shouldn’t be allowed to compete either.

IIRC the jury system was brought in largely at the behest of the UK (leveraging the enormous funding the country provides to the EBU) to prevent it just being a political popularity contest.

Our nil-points from the televote proved this absolutely right. It wasn’t a winning song, but it was in no way a zero pointer.

Bit of a shit day, really.

The juries still vote politically though. 12 from Cyprus for Greece, to name but one example. And it was only 3 years ago that Sam Ryder sort of won it for the UK. Maybe our song just wasn't Eurovision enough. Who knows, the competition never ceases to baffle me. What is really disturbing, though, is how many people blithely and obliviously voted for Israel and a very nondescript song. Quite shocking, really. Even if it was a fantastic song, Israel has no business being anywhere near Eurovision with its non-Europeaness and its murderous regime. Russia has a much better claim to take part with its slightly less murderous regime and slightly more European credentials. It's all so wrong.

Yes they got 323 votes out of a maximum of 444. That means from 37 blocks of votes they could get got an average of just under 9 votes (given UK and many gave 12).

With 25 songs eligible to vote for on 36 of the 37 blocks (the rest of the world can vote for all 26) you need to get c15 to 20% of the vote in each country to achieve that. Now, the Jewish diaspora is large across the globe but that doesn't mean (as we know) that Jewish = supporting the actions of Israel as a govt.

In the UK it's a phone vote only. In some countries it's app /online voting. in all, you can vote up to 20 times.

It's actually not a difficult model to game and hence the old soviet block manipulated it heavily when they 1st joined.

For me, that was one of the worst songs this evening. Ah well.
Let’s be honest Eurovision is a bit of joke, it always has been.

To be null points should be worn as a badge of honour.

I would also like to say here that I was surprised to see UK get nothing from the public. It was a marmite song that I thought would do better than expected with the juries (it was a show style tune sung with complex harmonies - the professionals who make up the juries would likely give some recognition of that) but given what appears to have been an irrational swing (based on the song rather than the politics) to Israel, I suspect that impacted any votes the UK could have got.

I thought Remember Monday were great. Better individual singing performances than Thursday and the harmonies were still on point. Not sure they could've done much else.

I didn't want Israel to win, but it was a good solid song, great performance from her, considering the mixed reactions in the arena, and they also foiled two protrestors with Palestinian flags getting onto stage to disrupt her. The Juries rightly gave it 4-8s

It does show up the limitations the UK are going to face with the public vote though. Unless we get an absolute nailed on winning chance song like Sam Ryder's, which overrides migrant voting bias in countries, then we're doomed to get zero or very few points. You look at the UK public vote, 12 to Israel, 10 to Poland and 8 to Lithuania. Neither Poland or Lithuania were stand out songs, so there has to be some country bias going on there, or am I misreading it? Happy to listen to other views on that.

Overall though, I still bloody love Eurovision and this has to be one of the closest competitions for years. Found it very hard to call, as I thought Austria's entry was too similar to Switzerland's last year.
