On my way there in September with my partner. 8 days and hope to see Pompeii, Capri and Amalfi coast. Staying in Sorrento. Went to all of them a few years ago but was just a super quick visit.

Have always liked Italy. Enjoyed 5 weeks touring around Tuscany last year. Italy is my favourite country to visit. I adore the language...!

I'm thinking of taking my fiancee to the Amalfi coast for a week next May. I've marvelled at the sights of Positano, Ravello, Sorrento, Ischia and Capri in a previous life, but my fiancee has never been to that part of Italy. I know that NSC is an unparalleled source of travel information, and would appreciate your help. We won't be hiring a car, but would like to see as much stunning coastal scenery in a week as possible, without bankrupting ourselves in the process.
We'd like to fly from Gatwick. I have a feeling that we'll have to fly to Naples. I don't think Solerno is an option until later next year. Staying in one location would probably make it difficult for us to visit all of the towns that we want to see, and having to fly into Naples and return to Naples for departure might also restrict us.
Please wise folk of NSC, can you offer some relevant travel suggestions. Must see places and places to avoid could prove invaluable to us.
You may wish to look at this.

should this blow I for one would not want to be any where near Amalfi. It is a super volcano!

I would struggle to think of a more enjoyable holiday tbh. Lake Garda was also pretty Epic. I bloody love Italy as a holiday destination.

A couple of years ago we stayed just south of Sorrento and found it be a great location to get to Amalfi coast, Sorrento, Capri and up the western coast (via train - cheap and reliable) to Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum.

Mrs Jakarta and I had a lovely holiday based in Sorrento many years ago.

Superb weather, beautiful scenery and great food and wine.

A word of wisdom, don't drive on the coastal roads, let a local driver take on hairpins with sheer drops to the sea... :lolol:

The castle on Ischia is stunning, and well worth a day – it's quite a climb to the top, with plenty to see all the way up.

Another island nearby is Procida. Very scenic and again worth a day.

For Pompeii, I'd recommend hiring a guide in advance. You can just walk around yourself, but it's huge, and a personal guide will ensure you see the key sights, and get decent commentary at the same time.

Stayed in Saint Agnello 5 days down time from work. Let me park tractor unit in the drive. Going back for holidays end Sept 10 days.

Hire a car and drive the Amalfi coast, scary but brilliant
Visit the town of Amalfi that's a must along with as many little towns on route.

Lovely part of the world but very busy... perhaps too much.

Have you considered flying in to Venice, having a night there and then going down to Lake Garda instead. Stay in Garda or Bardolino and do day trips as you see fit to visit other lakeside towns.

Assume the earliest you are flying out is Monday 25th May 2026, or are you planning your 'Where to watch the Albion in Amalfi' post already.

Did it when my daughter was a year old. She puked all the way to Amalfi on the bus and tried not looking out the window. So decided to finish the journey on a ferry, then sailed out into a storm and my wife decided to vomit. Fortunately my trousers absorbed most of their puke and made for a stinky trip back to Naples. Really the best things to see are Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Villa Applontis the streets of Naples and watching Napoli.

we went for the first time last october, we got the train to Sorrento then bus to Priaino, which is between Positano and Amalfi. Seemed to take forever. We came back by Ferry which was quicker and more pleasant. The airport bus goes to the City centre and Ferry port so my top tip is take the Ferry rather than train/bus
