It would be good to watch with my 8 year old but he isn’t interested and none of his class are either. Scripts have been awful, just want some scary monsters, hiding behind the sofa kind of stuff and the Doctor defeating them, it doesn’t need a big budget just some decent stories but it has lost its way.

I stopped watching when Jodie Whitaker took on the role. I’m not a fan of her. I tried a few episodes but thought they were quite poor.

To the wider board;

What’s the new guy like? New episodes any good? Worth a peek?

To go against the grain, I gave an episode a go hoping I'd be pleasantly surprised. i wasn't. The new assistant is one of the most annoying of all time and the shoe horning in of social commentary above story telling is eye rollingly bad. They are obsessed with it. It's a shame as we've seen some great Moffat and RTD episodes in the past but we are miles away from that quality.

I can't get on with Ncuti either. He's scared of his own shadow. I appreciate each doctor has their own take on it but he hasn't got a huge amount of gravitas for the part.. Capaldi for instance was clearly a fan and had his own ideas. It wouldn't surprise me if Gatwa hadn't ever seen an episode.

There's a reason why they want to pause it and it has low viewing figures. It's lost its way. Stick Andor on for some quality Sci fi instead

I'm glad this thread has popped up again. Thanks to The Doctor (@Harry Wilson's tackle ).

The current season is one of the best I've seen and I've watched since Pertwee's era.

Tonight's episode was a beautifully subtle takedown of right wing grifting arseholes and conspiracy theorists in general.

Ncuti Gatwa is (as has been mentioned) an absolute star, and after a patchy 1st season, is absolutely killing it this time round.

It's a shame the Disney+ deal seems to be ending, and season 3 is not yet green lot, and it seems increasingly likely that Ncuti is leaving as a result.

I can't see Ncuti staying in the role. He's such a talented actor that he wouldn't want to be seen as Dr Who above all else. It's a burden to carry around. Tom Baker seemed to dine out on it, but I'm not sure the modern set would want to.

I do think the show is fading into time now. Shame really, as I'm really enjoying the current series.

I've been cherry picking some of the older ones and am now getting to the end of the Tom Baker ones.

The other night I was watching an episode and it was bugging me that I recognised the companion (Romana 2) from somewhere.

I thought it was probably due to another film but a quick search reminded me that I met her a couple of times in the late 80s in London. First at a Douglas Adams book event where I ended up chatting to her and her husband, Richard Dawkins. At the time I was studying genetics at UCL and Dawkins invited me to a Stephen Jay Gould lecture/ meet and greet event where I bumped into them again, along with Steve Jones (my genetics lecturer, not the one from the Sex Pistols).

Anyway, she was absolutely lovely. As were Stephen Jay Gould, Douglas Adams and Steve Jones. Richard Dawkins less so.

I type this on a device that is, in effect, The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. A device that, in 1989, seemed beyond fanciful.

The last episode will enrage certain sorts, because there wasn't one single white actor in it :lolol:
Episode 2 is still bugging me, though. I assume the final episode is also something I'll find uncomfortable.
I loved Torchwood, till they seem to have devoted a whole series to some sort of pervert,
so I decided to not watch.
Know thy audience.
I hope all turns out well....

In my parallel quest to watch the lot, I am up to Peter Davison, the departure of Turlough and the appearance of Peri. Very entertaining.

I'm curious - what do you mean with the Torchwood comment? Seen all 4 series multiple times and can't think what you mean - unless you just mean Barrowman? Talking of perverts - the cameraman for the shot of Peri going swimming.....

Was there not a Torchwood serious around a child molester? Or did I misunderstand the trailer?
Yes, Peri goes swimming was a bit much.

Ah, there was one Season One story which has child molester yes but he's incidental to a story about fairies (!) written by a Sapphire and Steel writer if I recall correctly. Even if you skip that (and it's really nothing to be concerned about) there are some good stories in the first (slightly patchy) two series before an amazingly good 5 part one story series 3.

Ah, it was the 5 part series 3. I will dig it out and watch it again. I can get things badly wrong.
Many thanks for that

I too didn't like the whole Chibnall era, and I thought Whittaker was dreadful. NOT because she was a woman, but just because she was simply 'wrong', far too lightweight. (Someone like Ruth Wilson would have been brilliant).

But this new season is excellent. I'm still in 'catch up' mode (hence the delay in replying to your post!), but the ones I've seen so far have been really good. Just watched 'The Well', which, imo, would be a stand-out episode in any Who era.

Are you thinking of Children of Earth were they kill some more of the main cast destroy the torchwood base in Cardiff and the monster is an alien that uses children as drugs to get high? As that was a whole series and the closest I can think of to a child molester all series

For those who want retro Doctor Who the U&Eden channel are currently showing some of the old Jon Pertwee series.

I have caught a couple of these - there have been a couple of actors in there who went on to greater things but the sets and aliens do show their 50+ year age now.

Could be. As I said I watched the trailer and decided 'I'm out'. It seems I made a mistake.
That said, a whole series as one episode is not my favourite format....

Yeah, they're all on iPlayer as well, all the surviving ones and the ones where they've made animated versions of missing episodes. I'm working through all of them (in the Pertwee era at the moment).

NOTE: The very first series is missing as the son of the writer objected apparently.
