[Football] Proposal to allow alcohol in the stands

This morning on radio 5 they had someone championing the idea of allowing drinking in the stands. What is your view on this? For what it is worth I think it is a dreadful idea for many reasons but my top two would be

1. I hate going to rugby and have stopped because I get fed up with people going to the bar all the time and spilling beer on me on the way back. I don’t want to miss a goal with someone going to the bar past me.

2. The new thing of luzzing beer in the air is crap. Crucial late goal and pints will be chucked in the air. It takes me three hours to get home from the Amex and I don’t want to be covered in beer for that thanks.

Maybe I am just a grumpy sod

Agree totally. It´s bad enough having people squeezing past 10 minutes before and after half time.

While I’m in two minds about this, I’m definite about believing this should be up to the clubs, not the government. The legislation that followed on from the Taylor Report has had its day, and its legal requirements should either be handed back to the clubs’ discretion or absorbed into Health and Safety legislation, thus stopping football being a special case.

Not that I expect many on here will consider it but there are plenty of people from other cultures, creeds or who don't and have other issues with alcohol (not to mention parents with kids) where having beer (or indeed any alcohol) thrown over them would be a complete No for all manner of reasons and effectively would bar them from attending the games to avoid even the risk of it. Absolutely No and should forever be No.

If you cannot survive 45 minutes without alcohol then you have a serious problem and should seek urgent medical help.

I’m a non-drinker through choice, don’t mind other people drinking around me, don’t mind mates getting drunk, will happily socialise in the pub, Mrs Exile enjoys a glass of wine…but if I buy anything in WSU and it’s slid to me across the spilt beer on the counter tops I have to ask for another one. I agree with everything you say. Even the potential of getting covered in luzzed beer would make me question going to games. I’d object to beer in the stands anyway, but an instant lifetime ban for anyone luzzing it should be mandatory if it does ever happen.

You only have to look at the ridiculous amount of beer spillage sloshing around in the stands at the Amex pre-season friendlies to know it's a bad idea

Ajax away in Europe was dreadful for both beer and empty cup luzzing so it’s a no from me.

Said luzzers got banned in some capacity I believe and that's pretty much how I got my son a ticket for AEK Athens away 4-5 days before the match. Thank you to the luzzers on this occasion

Decent compromise that, because, like others, my two objections would be...

- The constant procession of people heading to get beers
- Luzzing

I'm not sure much can be done about the latter - luzzers gotta luzz - other than club punishment/bans. I guess the message would be understood after a period of people getting pissed off with getting wet through with beer.

The funny thing about this is - have any of us been to Albion games (in the UK) where we could drink and alcohol was available? I was a season ticket holder at the Goldstone pre-booze ban in 1985. I was too young to drink, but I have no recollection of other people drinking. Beverages didn't seem to get any stronger than Bovril

As I’ve mentioned once or twice on here (but I’m not one to go on about it [que an Uncle Albert impersonation] When I was in the Ajax end…..four of us enjoyed a few pints during the match, I don’t recall seeing many around us partake though, however multi tasking was made easy by the fact we couldn’t get too carried away during exciting periods of the match, luzzing one in the air when we scored was certainly out of the question.

I can go 45 minutes without alcohol. Most my week is alcohol free. I have a drink as part of whatever my weekend activity is though.

I do like to be able to enjoy my drink at a leisurely pace without being forced to either neck it or dump it because of some archaic law.

I can arrive at the theatre, a concert, the cinema, cricket, a quiz, literary talk or comedy show 10 minutes before it starts, purchase a drink and consume it whilst they are in progress. No reason why I shouldn’t be able to do this at football.
