I think the only thing that would really bring back atmosphere to Premier League grounds is unreserved standing. And cheaper tickets. Neither gonna happen.

I’ve got nothing against it in moderation but a petition is an exercise in futility

It is not a working man's game anymore where most people can afford to go weekly anymore.

Where do we stand on working women, or is it just lads lads lads?

A lot of the lack of atmosphere is down to apathy too

Some look for reasons to blame a lack of atmosphere on: from having to sit during games (it's been proven time and again an atmosphere can be created when sitting at matches) though to people looking at us like we are mad for singing at a game (caring too much what others think rather than just getting on with it) through to we won't sing a song about X until they do something to justify it... or the team need to perform better before we start and increase the atmosphere etc....

In our case, there are other contributing factors that won't be solved by either of the suggestions made by the op, which are that we moved into a new stadium, with allocated seating from the start, and when buying those St seats, you had no idea if you'd be near to people who were going to help generate an atmosphere or not. In the olden days there was an open terrace and you could gravitate towards those making a noise if you wished, (or mov away if you didn't) but having fixed seats allocated means that can't happen any more.

We also suffer from the often repeated need to leave early to beat the traffic / get an earlier train, something that seems bizarre to me as you go to watch the team play and yet some leave when the result is in the balance. This affects the atmosphere and what message does that send the players, that a lot of fans are more concerned about saving 30 minutes on their journey times home and less about what happens on the pitch late in the game (again evidence of apathy but also that society has changed and having patience seems less of a thing nowadays) - Blaming the club for the traffic situation and train schedules etc when it's not something they can really control, and using it as a reason to justify not going (or leaving early - again signs of apathy)

Maybe if we had a few seasons first without any pre-allocated seats, then groups would have naturally congregated together but that was never likely as the first games back in Sussex were always going to be very popular.

The Goldstone only tended to have a small group (usually found fairly central in the North Stand) that made noise for most of the game, there were times were more of the stand, and other parts of the ground joined in from time to time, but in the most part they were fairly quiet. Cheaper tickets back then, or pyros wouldn't have made much of a difference to the atmosphere back then, and i doubt they would nowadays

I'd have thought if anyone would be a fan of pyro it'd be you

English fans react to moments on the pitch it’s been proved time and time again. A bad ref decision can be enough to get the crowd going. Breathing in smoke and hearing a bang drum for 90 minutes is not going to help.
Our last best atmosphere was probably Marseille at home electric all night.

Surely those most likely to use the pyros are away fans, and there already is a ticket cap there
True, and even then it doesn't always help. The season those naughty Palace Always Ultras smuggled in a few bangers was the worse atmosphere they'd produced at the Amex in a good long while. When they weren't letting off their fireworks they seemed to be meditating as much as chanting.

And yet we didn't score until the last minute. Doesn't that completely contradict the rest of your post?
