I watched "Darkest Hour" again last night - a wonderful film (if not always entirely accurate), but for me it illustrates the pressures and dynamics of the situation and of the players.

A gem of a film - slow burning but absolutely gripping

So many.

Thought provoking?.. Anything from A Matter Of Life and Death to Fight Club, The Browning Version, the list goes on.

Thought provoking AND controversial? Hmm,

La Haine

Lolita

Betty Blue

Mississippi Burning

Leon

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest

To name a few

The 70’s and the 90’s were good decades for cutting edge but very watchable controversial films.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Maybe not that controversial, but definitely thought provoking for a me at 17 years old.
The novel was certainly controversial. Depicting mental health patients as humans with feelings, aspirations, and social awareness was not really seen up until then.

I heard a good story about the making of that film.

Milos Forman the director, had put all the cast on a plane and flown them over to location early.

The plane landed and Forman was waiting on the runway.

Jack Nicholson had given them all acid on the journey.

The hatch opened and this mob of gurning loons; Nicholson, The Chief, Danny Devito, Christopher Lloyd all came tumbling out, down the steps, wondering through the airport like, well like mental patients.

Forman said he just thought to himself “what have I done”?

🤣

Saving Private Ryan.

The indifference shown to taking a man’s life.

Cuckoo’s Nest is a great choice. Vividly highlighting the cruelty within mental institutions of the time, also showing how just one faux pas (Randle feigning mental ill health) instigated a likely life drugged to the hilt within such a place.

My choice …. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button … although a fantasy, a poignant tale of love and growing older, highlighted through the reverse in BB’s case.

I can remember seeing Soldier Blue when I was about 15 as being the moment I started to question so much that I was being taught in school. I've never been able to watch it since then.
Not sure if it counts as a film but The Naked Civil Servant had quite an impact as well.
