[Albion] Mark Ormerod in THAT shirt / Hereford Day / Embers / New podcast

The initial response to my novel, 'Embers' has been super-exciting. I'm just a Brighton fan who has told a story about that pivotal 1996/97 season. One really exciting part has been to connect with some players from that era. Gary Hobson, Paul McDonald, Stuart Tuck, Kevin McGarrigle and Mark Ormerod have all been really positive about the book and Mark went to the effort of putting THAT shirt on and sending me through this photo. Robbie Reinelt rightly gets the headlines for that day, but Ormerod made a number of key saves and without him, we would have been heading into the Conference.

And yes, everyone remembers Robbie’s goal and the euphoria it led to, but let’s not forget the moment in the dying minutes when Hereford were clean through one-on-one with Orms, and he blocked the shot. Could have been a whole different story if he hadn’t made that save - a real sliding doors moment in the club’s history.

THAT save made Ormerod an Albion legend in my mind. I even told him so in the slightly dodgy venue of the urinals at an Albion end of season League winning dinner. He did look at me a bit weirdly at me after I said it

I still remember my thought of ”Oh shit” as that big Hereford striker bore down on goal like it was yesterday.

Edit. Is my memory playing tricks on me? I just rewatched the highlights of that game and couldn’t see what I remember as a Hereford forward bearing down in a one on one with Ormerod who saved the shot? Anyone else recall this?

It was pivotal too that Gritt chose a relative rookie as his number one over the more experienced Nicky Rust. Ormerod was solid across the whole run-in (especially at home!)…

Really great pic. Also really enjoying your book, a great read which I would highly recommend it to everyone.

Memories play a trick on you, you remember the great escape at the end of the season but sometimes forget just how dire we were.

Very slight criticism is when you first talk about Case after Brady resigned. Says "their two brief seasons in the top division". We spent four seasons up there. I'd suggest you were thinking Case played two seasons for us in the top flight. Apart from that very well done and shouldn't detract from a very good read.

What a great photo. Mark often used to come into the Hove Park Tavern when I worked there. He was always a pleasure to deal with.
As an aside, I really wish I could still fit into tops from almost 30 years ago

It's more of a looped ball over the top and inexplicably Foster makes a poor attempt to poke it over Ormerod and puts it straight into his gloves. Critical save but by no means a worldie. Sorry Mark!

Funny thing, despite being at Hereford and witnessing the great escape, inc l think nearly all the games he played in for us, when he walked out at half time today, l thought who on earth is that?

Mind you, l'm sure we all look an awful lot different nearly 30 years on!

I’m not sure I would have recognised him if I hadn’t seen his photo in the opening post. He was only 21 when we played that match

I was sat in the home end upper seats (opposite the dugouts) and was directly inline with the penalty spot. It took a couple of moments to realise that mark had saved it, I remember shouting ’shitttttt’ along with the other Albion fans in the stand. Horrible moment.

Can I just say that I hated the whole day, one Of the least enjoyable footballing experiences of my life. Yes we got the point but a combination of alcohol and winding myself up so much pre match just sucked the life out of me. It was also the realisation that Gillingham beckoned and weren’t anywhere near being out of the woods.

The section of the stand I was in was full of Brighton apart from a family in the front row in their Hereford shirts. When they scored they went mad everyone else stayed firmly in their seats.
