Whilst there is certainly a discussion to be had around the implications and consequences of words....I feel you are at the very extreme end of this discussion. There is nuance, and context, in language, I feel you are missing this.
I am still yet to see or hear ANY explanation as to what this very funny secret joke/context is about “killing your local Tory MP”, you know, the one they’ve already apologised for, once the cancellation started.

I’ve not seen one explanation, however flimsy and retroactive, which puts this “joke” into context.

In late 2024, they shouted “Up Hamas, Up Hezbollah”. But just yesterday they said: “Let us be unequivocal: we do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah. We condemn all attacks on civilians, always. It is never okay. We know this more than anyone, given our nation’s history.”

I’m really confused, because I’d have thought shouting out “Up Hamas, Up Hezbollah” while draped in and waving a Hezbollah flag would imply support.

What’s happened is, they’ve said some very stupid, very possibly illegal things, and are seeing their bookings being cancelled and very possibly facing police interviews, so are backing down and trying to pass off their unacceptable comments and behaviour as “banter”.

Meanwhile, people who really hate the Tories are siding with them because it’s the Tories innit, and they probably feel the same way.

Ultimately someone could explain it, but you are still not going to give it leeway. Many people agree with them, and that's that, you don't because you don't have political sympathies with them. You won't be listening to Kneecap, you won't be going to a Kneecap show, so why does it bother? Are we really still being outraged about musical acts? Is this the mid 70s? When I went to Primavera on the Weekend of the Kings Coronation, I dread to think what you would have made of what most of the acts had to say about the Monarchy that weekend. Just think its all a bit old hat. Stand up Comedians say terrible things, no one is asking for it to be banned. Their Spotify listeners have increased 10 fold since their Coachella performance so I think they'll be doing fine on the publicity and bookings front. I expect they'll get a talking to by the OB and that will be that, I don't think they'll be doing it again.

So which is it? They were telling the truth and they unironically were suggesting people kill their local Tory MP, therefore many people agree with them - or it was all a joke which was missing context, which is what they are claiming? And the waving Hezbollah flags and saying “Up Hamas, Up Hezbollah” - was that unironic and people agree with them, or was that lacking context too?

That makes no sense.

Read their statement. I mis phrased the part about people agreeing with them, so just ignore it.

What do you actually want out this whole situation? You want them to be banned? To be jailed? They apologised for it, no one has directly killed an MP as a direct result of one of their shows, and they'll probably get a chat from the police. I just don't get what all this moral outrage is about. What's the limit of when someone says an apology is sincere enough. Badenoch has obviously been burnt because her legal challenge broke down and has an axe to grind, they also went on stage in America and displayed 'F*** Israel' people will have an axe to grind there. I think this is such a non story, in the actual Israel/Palestine debate, and what is actually motivating people to attack and kill MPs because so far the two deaths of MPs in recent years have not come as a result of Irish Langauge Rap Groups. If Badenoch wants to increase MP safety she could tackle the reason that Jo Cox was killed which was right wing extremism or the reason David Amess was killed which was a failure of the intelligence services to deal with Islamic Terrorism.

Here it is all over the news, NSC and no doubt hundreds of other social networking sites from people who, like me, had absolutely no idea who they were a few days ago.

But the fact that this is the latest Kemi Badenoch culture war campaign is of course, purely coincidental

Words have consequences.

Indeed they do.

Did the Tory Councillors wife ( with young children ) just receive a lengthy prison sentence for 'words' ?.

Not at all surprised that the piece of vermin who calls himself London Irish isn't happy...ha ha .

lol why wouldn't I happy? I'm going to see them in a few weeks - them enraging all the very worst people in Britain will add to the occasion wonderfully! And vermin eh - yeh let's all take seriously the plea for careful use of language from pompous arses everywhere

I somehow first became aware of Kneecap during lockdown. And even though I'm not massively into hip hop, they were one of my most listened to artitsts on Spotify in 2020 - after Coldplay, obvs. My take away from having listened to them for 5 years is that their lyrics or anything they say during a performance should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Someone should tell Badenoch about the Barbara Streisand effect. Their fame is potentially going to go stratospheric once a few million rebellious teenagers are motivated to listen to them just to piss off their Daily Mail reading parents.

Well I think their comments were ill founded. They were deeply ignorant, they showed a complete lack of understanding of modern political methods, and simply served to highlight the sort of intense stupidity that politicians encounter from armchair pundits who forget to think before they open their mouths. But with a full and frank apology that they're about to give us this afternoon I’m sure they can dig themselves out of this rather ugly hole.

As I said in #51, the context is there in plain sight. There is no needed to provide any further detail. It's no different to a parent saying to a child "you steal those biscuits again and I'll kill you". It's just a flippant comment said in the heat of the moment. That's the context. It's pretty clear that they are not advocating killing MPs anymore than this parent wants his child dead.
