I started having an issue with my Apple Pay yesterday, the card is being declined and I cannot understand why.

For the record I have
1) Spoken to my bank and they say there is nothing they can see which is wrong with the card. In fact, I can use the card….just not with Apple Pay.
2) Checked IOS is up to date.
3) Yes, phone has been turned on and off.
4) Card has been removed and re-installed.
5) I have switched two apps to PayPal, which is connected to my bank and not the offending credit card, both work fine.
6) Googled this issue, it’s a bit cannot-see-the-wood-for-the-trees. I could not find any suggestions beyond what I have tried.

Not sure what else I can do now.

I can survive with the PayPal option but would like to resolve this.

Can anyone help?
This might be covered already.

I had the same exact issue a year or so ago. Apple Pay just didn't work. I ended up going to the Apple Store who ran a full diagnosis on the phone and it turned out the chip that makes Apple Pay work had stopped working. The phone hadn't been dropped and in any case I had a fairly meaty case. Everything else passed their tests, just the Apple Pay chip. I was lucky the phone was still under warranty so I got a new phone.

I now have a phone case with a credit card slot, so I can carry a card just in case....

Hi HT

I had a problem last year - even took it up with Apple who insisted it was the banks fault, the bank insisting it was Apple because my card account was fine.

After two weeks detective work, 3 hours in bank in person getting them to contact someone at banking security etc it turned out that my bank card was due to expire in 2 months time and was told on the phone VISA had issued me a new card which they had not yet sent me.

Well you think my old card would still work on the apple pay as it still had 2 months before it expired but it didn’t because VISA had sent Apple new card details which invalidated my existing card for Apple Pay!

The fix was loading up the new card details to my apple wallet - I had to set up online banking to get my new pin number as obviously I couldn’t be told that over the phone.

highly unlikely to be the issue. When a card is renewed you never have to re-provision your card to applepay. You only do this if the account is completely new or the device is different.

The act of removing your existing card and loading the new one fixed the issue as tokenisation failed on the previous one. Adding a new expiry date triggered a new token fixing the issue.

Please send your card details along with all relevant banking info so I can see if I can help. Thanks

No not normally but it was an error because this was what actually happened according to the bank apparently - I’m only repeating what I was told by Apple, the central security department of my bank who had access to VISA and also by the local manager of my bank who were the ones speaking to them on my behalf while I stood in the bank. VISA had in error invalidated my card when they issued the new one.

Anyway, the problem was fixed with a new card so I only mentioned it as a possible reason for a card failure..

Yep. Sounds like your issuer failed to keep the card file updated.

@Herr Tubthumper case is specific to online/ecomm trxns. If it was failing at pos (In store) then you would consider nfc chip in the device. So in this case it’s definitely failing tokenisation validation on the issuer side. No account restrictions as physical plastic is working. Basically, the token card number is invalid but the real one is fine.

Happens all the time and is normally resolved in a few hours. If not, you can ask for a replacement card (new number) and provision this which will start a new tokenisation.

Silly question have you deleted the card off your device, or added another one and tried again!

Sounds to me like the temporary block on the card was applied to the virtual card in the apple wallet, but when the block was removed this was not also applied to the virtual card.

Thanks. How can I remove the block on the virtual card? I found details online regarding the Apple Titanium card (whatever this is), but not regular virtual cards. I followed the Titanium instructions but there’s no block button. I guess this is an Apple issue?

Maybe try blocking and unblocking your card, if you have that option.
I have done this on the actual card, using the bank’s app. Nothing changed.

Order a replacement card. Remove current card from apple wallet. Load new card to apple wallet.
Or temporarily load Frau Tubthumper's card to HT's apple wallet, see if that works. If it does, then the problem can be isolated to the card. To double check, load HT's card to Frau's apple wallet, see if that works
