I still think that some evidence of FH having a system is priority. Seems to have ditched earlydoors many of our South American wunderkids that made our football so enjoyable to watch. In terms of entertainment we've taken a giant leap backwards this season
I’m probably quoting the wrong person here to suggest FH is getting the time afforded to GP but starting with a much better squad. Anyway my point is that the football is not as good as Potter TRIED to get us playing. At least it was obvious what he was trying to do. It is just as dull and infuriating to watch the pedestrian build up and we no longer have a manager capable of changing it as we get sucker punched in matches as is now happening again most games like it did early season. Almost a season gone and I am still not sure what the “process” is. Worryingly I’m not sure that the players know either :lolol:

Gary Stevens made his top flight debut as a 17 y.o. and went on to play 26 times that season*, so obviously it can be done.
He played right back most of the time when he first came into the team so not quite as exposed as being thrown in at centre back. Starting young defenders at full back used to be a thing back in the day (for example, Jamie Carragher started at right back) but doesn't seem to happen much now

Plodder started with an infinitely better core matchday squad than FH ever had access to

Willing to bet one English Pound that van Hecke and Boscogli will be our starting centre-backs next season
Have we pulled out of the deal for Boscagli then?

Willing to bet one English Pound that van Hecke and Boscogli will be our starting centre-backs next season, assuming someone doesn't offer silly money for JPVH, and neither suffer a pre-season injury.
Yes I can’t see a club offering big money for JPvH, I’m not 100% convinced in Boscagli I don’t think he brings what we need, I’d like to see a pacier option. Maybe that can be the understudy, I don’t think we need to bring in more than 2, although that hinges on what will happen with Cashin, as I appreciate there’s a bit of a strange cloud over him.

I think this is a big question that can be discussed elsewhere, but I do agree, there’s definitely question over his “system“,I think regardless of manager an overhaul of central defence and additions of full backs is required. With a specialist right back and 5 fit and available centre backs it gives whoever is in charge the option to play 4 or 5 at the back, and has a fair amount of depth.

In terms of quality, it's pretty much a given that there will be a net outflow of talent away from the club over the Summer. Same as most recent Summers really

There's a very good chance you're right. But I don't think we know this is a permanent irreversible decline. The drop off in his movement is so dramatic it looks like injury is contributing. 33 isn't mega old. There's a chance he get's fit and has a very good season next season and who knows the season after.

We'll know more at the start of next season. But in any, case succession planning clearly needs to be accelerated in case his movement is never getting any better from what we saw at the weekend.

There's a chance that we move on all of, Igor, Cashin, Veltman and much more reluctantly Van Hecke this summer. Webby, if we get anything out of him, that's a bonus. We don't have anyone from the u23 or any loanes who are imminently going to step up to the PL. So we could be bringing in 4 centre backs. We need Dunky fit for a season at least to oversee the transition
At one point Dunky was leaning over holding his side so maybe not fully recovered.

So by replacing 50%+ of our starting defence what we're saying is we need ANOTHER 'transition' season? FFS. I do hope that the lack of defenders in our £200m splurge is at least being discussed in the boardroom, and maybe there is at least a bit of debugging going on in that algorythm.......

I wouldn’t say we need another transition season, I want to see some centre backs come in ready and a RB. The manager comments are simply if we should change manager or not, personally I want him to stay.

I'd make JPvH captain, and I'd do it now. If Dunk is in the twilght then JPvH simply has to stay for 25/26, or else I'd really worry about us next season as we would basically be changing 75% of our back 4. That's what Palace did and it took them 3 months and being in the bottom 3 for it to bed it in.

I'd also make JPvH ineligible from being voted player of the season, in fact just give it to Milner now.

It is a really great opportunity for a very good CB to claim Dunks place and get regular game time at our club.

I think we will try to sign one very quick, premier league ready, starting center back to play alongside JPVH and another young Cashin ? type we think we can grow. Webster, Dunk and Igor have all looked very good this season when paired with JPVH, without him, not so much and I believe can make up the five.

Dunk and Webster (when fit) can do a good job for the team and are great around the squad (see Steele). I was never convinced by Igor until he had that run of games at CB this season where he was very good, and surprisingly fast (the fastest out of the CBs we have at the moment).

Or we could change 75% of our center backs ???
