At what point do tariffs become so high as to be an effective trade embargo meaning that raising them any further has an insignificant effect, or have we already passed that point?
I may be imagining it, but I think I read that someone ( can’t remember who) said anything over 50% is basically irrelevant, because trade would effectively stop at that point anyway.

Surely that depends what tariffs are applied to? For example, China imports soybeans from the US but these are available from elsewhere.

It’s a bit harder when the product is an iPhone, manufactured in China with no realistic short-term alternative for Apple to switch to.

This is good from Max Hastings on the current dismantling of US democracy through state capture. It’s easy to get lost in the scale of what’s happening.

A great, but very sobering read. So many parallels with Germany in the 30s.
They didn't do a particularly robust job when designing the checks and balances did they.

Good to see that the BBC online coverage of the turmoil on the global financial markets hasn't suffered from dumbing down now that all the proper journalists have fled to the Cotswolds for their Easter break, giving the staffers and juniors their time to shine...

"Investors turn to gold for stability...gold has been valuable to mankind for centuries. It's a scarce metal, but not completely rare. It has a relatively low melting point and so can easily be made into coins or jewellery. While silver tarnishes over time, gold doesn't.

As Tony Hadley sang in the Spandau Ballet classic: 'You're indestructible.' He was 'always believing', in gold - investors continue to do so as well."
Grandma knows how to suck eggs as well you know.

I read they have a factory in India, mainly to supply the Indian market, but they are thinking of upping production there. What is Trump going to do if Apple continues getting components from China for their Indian factory?
