[Albion] What are the reasons for our awful injury record?

What are the reasons for our awful injury record?

  • Training (Too or not enough physical, consistent, etc)

  • Playing style (High tempo, pressing, fast transitions, etc.)

  • Physical training (gym, conditioning, yoga, etc.)

  • Nutrition (Too low/high protein, fats, oils, carbs, vitamins, minerals, etc)

  • Age of the players

  • Aggressive opposition (bad tackles, etc.)

  • Players lifestyle (hobbies, other sport, etc.)

  • Bad luck

  • Pre-existing conditions

  • Equipment (Footwear, training kit, etc.)

  • Unsuitable playing surface (training ground, stadium pitches)

  • All of the above

  • None of the above (we don't have an injury problem)

  • None of the above (Disciplinary issues disguised as injuries)

  • Other (please specify)

What are the reasons for our injury record? Select all that apply.

These must be considerations internally at the club, but it would be interesting to hear what you all think.

If anybody can offer any kind of actual inside insight in to this, then I’d be really interested to hear it. But if it’s just what somebody who has never seen the players train guesses, then it’s not really worth discussing.

A mixture of reasons. From what we've heard from Fabian himself the intensity of the training may play a part, we've been unlucky with some bad on-field injuries from bad challenges. It has been put to me that the pitches may play apart also although I have no idea if that is a factor or not.

We have also just been a bit unlucky, especially as we have one position in particular wiped out completely.

Mix of things.

A lot of changes to both football and medical staff though so we'll see in time if it will improve or not.

Many of the players most frequently injured this season seem to be carrying stuff from last year. Solly March and his ACL injury and the aftermaths of it, Evan Fergusons ankle problems coming back. Ferdi and Wieffer arrived injured and least in Mats case he's had thigh problems just like in Feyenoord. Lewis Dunk battled a foot injury, no idea if it has haunted him a bit this year.

Others are... old. James Milner is injured because he's a dinosaur. Veltman is another one getting less and less available every year.

Some of our players are only playing in Brighton because they are sicknotes who had their careers hampered by injuries. Lamptey, Webster and Welbeck are good examples of this. Lamptey and Webster would have moved on three years ago if they had functional hamstrings. Welbeck wouldn't be in Brighton in the first place.
Sometimes we sacrifice reliability for quality, sometimes it just kind of ends up that way.

Given how we play and the demographics of the players we buy I expect us to remain a team high up the injury table. Hopefully a little bit lower than has been the case for two years now.

The injuries largely seem to be different things. The odd hammy, the odd broken toe, a slow recovery from ACL. A few happened in training, a few on internationals, a few in games, some from crude hacks, some off the ball. We've lost a few oldies a few youngies and a few in the middle.

From the distance I am (and we area) I'm not sure there's enough of a pattern to attribute it to anything other than luck. Having said that, the club absolutely need to be investigating and looking for patterns, i'm sure they are.

I think it's just simply a combination of what HS said about us picking up players with poor injury records because they have extra quality, and having a group of older players who tend to be more prone to injury (Dunk, Webster and Veltman have moved into that category in recent years).

Still, this season feels way better than last season when our squad depth meant we had few options on the bench and even the starting line-up looked thin. We now have lots of good options on the bench even with our current injuries and have the luxury to shift the likes of last season regulars like Enciso, Facundo, Fergie out on loan without really missing them.

Yep, can't wait for Saturday and Dunk and Cashin starting together at centre back with, erm, Charlie Tasker ready just in case.......

Examples please :)
Well, Milner and Dunk are probably age related, O'Riley was definitely aggressive opponents. A few of the newbies have said how hard it was to adjust to the intensity of the training, as well as matches. Didn't Ferdi have some kind of injury when he arrived? Gruda too possibly? Georginho seemed like bad luck, unless we can blame the pitch.
