That second goal was bad.
Missing the through ball happens but the way he chased…..if that is his top speed why would anyone think he could cut it at this level?
It is not like writing off a striker after missing a couple of chances, as they can improve. 99% of times if a centre back is that slow he is toast. No amount of playing the simple ball well makes up for it.

Very difficult to judge him based on one performance against a good side especially when many of his team members looked a bit jaded.

Like others have said his passing is very good but he needs to get up to speed with the quicker movement of players in the PL. Let’s see what he’s like after a few more games before rushing to judge in my view.

Not sure how much credit a Brighton CB deserves for carrying the ball and playing the simple ball well. It’s a relatively easy skill to learn and probably something they do at Brighton training day in day out as it’s such a feature of our play. I would bet the development squad CBs are good at it too.
It doesn’t make up for fundamentals like having the physical attributes to stop attackers.

I have nothing but praise for Veltman, but right back is an area that we can improve on for the first 11, not just backup.

I though Mwepu was terrible on his debut as well. I couldn’t believe we’d paid over 20m for someone that didn’t look like he could trap a bag of cement.

Next time I saw him live he’s curling in a goal of the season contender at Anfield.

I never want a Brighton player to fail.

But the cold reality is that PL strikers are either very quick or very good in the air or sometimes both. If the centre back can't compete in those physical duels, they will be ruthlessly targeted and we'll concede a lot of goals.

As others have said, even if he can make 60 yard diags every single time, that's nowhere near enough to compensate for having a centre back who can't match his opponent in a duel in the air and on the ground.

If you're slow in the Championship, there probably isnt much upping the pace required for the Prem. It was a horrible debut.

GB is probably being overly harsh here, but I do think Cashin is our most puzzling signing in years.

I thought Dan Burn was the must puzzling signing we'd ever made - it made no sense to me at all. A player who was barely proving himself at Championship level, and we signed him and immediately loaned him out? At the time it seemed utterly pointless and a waste of time, but the data knew something we didn't. Or maybe there was something in his personality/attitude that coupled with the data to suggest his capacity to improve was insane and there was a profit to be made.

I trust the data and I trust whatever it is that caused us to sign Cashin. I don't get it, I don't see why we've signed him and I thought he looked like a competition winner last night. But it's one game, his first, against Champions League Quarter-Finalists who were countering on us because of the circumstances of the match. I'm not writing the player off and I hope his trajectory matches Dan Burn's in the longer term.

The thing that I noticed most was that he doesn’t physically look like an elite-level footballer. Even before kicking a ball he had the look of an East Enders actor playing in a pro-celebrity charity game.

This has been the problem we have never addressed - there is no pace in the centre of our defence, and although Pervis is fast going forward, he often seems in very little hurry to get back. Vitor Reis might have been the answer, but as soon as City were interested we were never going to get him. Until we sort this out, we are always going to be vulnerable to teams that look to hit us on the break.

Puzzling indeed - £9M splashed out for Cashin while practically giving McConville away did seem odd; still does IMHO.
