ok, so what about the other 15 or so examples I gave- do they not indicate we have a significant challenge in Key/big games too often?

I'm making the point that in "key games" we continually under perform and its a worrying part of our DNA...
I could go through each one and come up with a reason, but I can't be bothered as you will still come back with your whataboutary. Some you have picked as bottled matches are just weird. Even the Athens game, that night was like losing our virginity with Katie Price, we didn't perform couldnt maintain our erection. We still qualified top of the group unbeaten after that.

Newmarket.
Each season we have the remainder of the season before's players that nobody wanted to buy, plus a fair few young undiscovered speculative purchases.
Many of our players are mentioned in the media each match and they pretty much always mention how they all admire the BHA way.
So our team each year is OK, sometimes fairly good, but not great, however if you listen to some on here we're always Champions League standard.
Excitable supporters get carried away and lose sight of the fact that wishing we were Champions League Standard isn't the same as being Champions League standard.
We are a good team who are where we are in the league because we've done well in some of our games, enough to get the wins.
We are not a top team who are in their current league position because they have lost a few games.
It's ok to wish the ultimate footballing rewards for our team but some perspective is needed.

Nothing will come close to us bottling the Championship title.

This still annoys me and fuels, in part, my dislike of both Saudi FC and Villa.

Totally Hughtons fault.
Let the players go on an extended binge. Made too many changes for the Norwich game and lost momentum. Thought we would rock up and beat Bristol C for the title...wrong. Put too much pressure on Villa Park ( where we never do well )
Too many players and fans celebrated as if the job was done after promotion was secured. It wasn't. We had never won the Championship ( Div 2 ) title. We deserved it. We chucked it away as if it didn't matter and tried to hide the disappointment by saying promotion was the thing that counted.
Made us look small time and months of hard work pissed up against the wall.

The Pritchard/Norwich game annoyed me more. How do you legislate for losing two nil to a team who didn’t get a shot on target.
We never get anything at Villa Park, but it should’ve been done and dusted before that.

I didn't say I believe we win more key games than we lose.
It's what your defining as 'key'. It very much feels you're say winning a 3rd or 4th round cup tie isn't a key game but losing in the quarter final is.

I don’t think suggesting that the further you get in a cup competition the more important the games get is a particularly wild take, tbh.

I don’t entirely agree with the first post, mainly because I don’t think yesterday was a key game, but acting like every round of the cup is equal is a bit silly.

And look who's coming up at the weekend. I expect a heavy defeat against an improving Palace. Sadly we are on our traditional end of season downwards trajectory.
Sadly, it’s looking like an inevitable defeat against them lot. Pivotal week likely to end on a massive downer :( Out of cup and qualification looking increasingly unlikely.

Indeed.

But you'd never have known it with the...*drumroll*...'Championship Runners-Up' trophy celebrations.

how many more times are we going to blow chances in key/ big games - I reckon we've won not many in all the time I've been going (since 1993). Doncaster H (1997), Bristol City Play off final 2006 and Marseille (h) to win the group in europa league about only times I can remember us winning any of type of "key / big games

5 Wembley appearances - no wins (2 x fa cup semi finals, 1 cup final & replay, one play off final)
Play offs vs Palace
Play offs vs Sheff Weds
Luton in JPT trophy final
Palace A - 5-0
Millwall FA cup Qtr final
Swindon Play offs
Championship collapse (not winning the league)
Middlesboro A
Play offs vs Derby
Athens (H)

Sure there's others i missed

So frustrating that we continually do this... Tonight was such a great chance to take a significant leap and Dent villa - We just don't take our chances in these types of games to be dominant and kill teams off.
f*** me….. and I thought I was miserable after a defeat!

Key injuries this time.

That Villa squad/eleven appeared to contain every single ‘name’.
Can’t believe Villa were 2/1 pre game!

So you’d agree that winning a cup semi would be a “Key game” as against say a fifth round tie

We succeeded in the single biggest game in the club’s history. The game that if we’d lost the club might not have survived (I assume this point has already been made but I haven’t read the whole thread).

I think the OP’s scope was more about silver than wooden spoon successes!

I think I preferred the Fab out thread.

Whatever will they think of next to complain about after a defeat.

I honestly think some people should find a less distressing interest.

We aren’t bottle jobs, but I would definitely say the likes of Newcastle, Forest, Villa are far more resilient. But they spend gazillions on premier league ready players, which we don’t. Accepting we are in a bracket below those teams with Fulham, Bournemouth, Brentford etc makes life a lot less stressful!
