How many on here have had concussion before and how was it for you?

My experience the last few days has not been great. I came down to Devon on Saturday evening (missing the football and watched pens in the services) to play Mother’s Day golf with mum. It all started very well scoring very nicely and even hit pin for a hole in one (still not had one) then it all went wrong..I had played stroke index one hole a 465 yard par four like a pro with driver 9 iron to about 20 foot. As I put my bag by the 7th tee I heard a call of fore the exact moment a ball smashed into the back of my head.

I took a couple of steps staggering before I hit the deck holding my head. Immediately it was obvious I had a problem with blood coming out of my hands and down my arm. My mum and her mate used towels with pressure to stop bleeding before others helped very quickly. Before long a first aid kit had arrived and they were onto 999 (concerns about fracture and all the sodding blood). After about 45 mins I was moved and ended up at hospital where they prodded and poked and glued it all back together before I was sent on my way with an information sheet.

I was able to pick up my car yesterday afternoon from the golf club and drove back to mum’s feeling okay. Last night I didn’t sleep well and this morning I woke up and felt like I was in a different planet. I was slurring speech, mixing up words, struggling to string a sentence together and basically a complete space cadet. We called 111 and I was sent to hospital for a Check up. They were concerned because I had no idea what my phone number was and other quite simple questions. Struggling to focus etc. The CT scan was clear so I merely have severe concussion. I can’t drive for several days and can’t work at a computer etc. This message is the longest I have looked at screen all day.

It is weird - I have moments where I am not sure what day it is then seem okay for a while (such as now) before going groggy again

Has anyone else suffered from concussion and what do you remember of it all?

Advice from me
1) if you hit a stray golf ball shout FORE as loud as you can. This bloke checked to see if anyone was there and by the time he saw me and shouted I had been hit from about 130 yards by his drive.
2) a reminder that if someone shouts fore then protect your head. A golf ball effing hurts and the scar will last for ages and the bump long enough.

Shit. Hope you're on the mend, sounds very nasty. Goes without saying but make sure to ease back into things, even if you feel totally back to normal.

I only had concussion once when I was 10, was climbing over a cargo net in the woods at a Scout camp, somehow chucked myself over the top and landed head first on the bark. Akela took me to hospital in her car, they let me out after a couple of hours as I hadn't shown any signs of concussion, then as soon as we got back to her car I vommed all over the seats 😐 Straight back in and don't remember much of that. I remember thinking I had fallen asleep when I went back to the hospital but I obviously hadn't, then my parents just seemed to appear from nowhere- this was a good few hours after. It felt like I was totally losing chunks of time for a couple of weeks, a really odd sensation. No lasting drain bamage as far as I know though.

Also had a massive lump on the side of my head for a few days which got me the nickname 'football head':

I had concussion several years ago. I was on a school trip to Knockhatch Adventure Park and had swung myself when at the top of a ladder to get onto a castle structure. I hadn't noticed the top had an iron safety rail and I smacked my head fully onto it. I managed to hang on to the ladder and lowered myself somehow to the ground. I remember feeling relieved, but then felt the pain in my forehead, reached up and found I had some bleeding from a nasty gash and staggered a few steps before falling to the floor and passing out. I think I was not long out, but when I looked up, there were a couple of worried and alarmed children, not from my school, looking over me. I asked them to find a grown up and they found one of our party. I was treated with ice at the scene and then soon after we left.

Apart from the pain in my head, I felt really dizzy and unwell. My wife drove me from our school to the DGH and they checked me and were satisfied it was 'only' concussion with the usual caveats. I returned to work a couple of days later when the dizziness subsided. I never heard the last of it though as I needed a fair bit of help and treatment from the on-site first-aiders, and I was only on the trip as a first-aider.

I hope your symptoms rapidly improve @Berty23, I am sure they will in a day or two.

Sounds awful, such an unlucky accident.

I had concussion in 2019. Playing 5 a side football in a sports hall and we played an above head height rule, so I went up for a header and the guy challenging with me ducked out of the challenge and I ended up rolling over his back smashing the back of my head on the hard floor. Blood everywhere and a night spent in A&E. It took a week for me to get back to some kind of normal and still to this day have completely lost all memories of that weekend. Some things came back to me but most was lost, and everything seemed very hazy and almost dream like.
I'm certain that my memory has been affected as I struggle to remember things like I used to, and have struggled with depression and managing stress. It's hard to say if it's linked but there's research out there linking concussion with depression.

Stood up quickly once after leaving a kitchen wall cupboard door open.
Collapsed in a heap on the floor with blood gushing out the top of my head.
Not a serious thing for sure but felt nauseous for a few days and eventually went to the doctor who diagnosed a mild concussion.

I had concussion play football on an Astro pitch, Astro on concrete, that is. Got knocked back in a tackle and was out cold, woke up with my entire team surrounding me. I was kept in hospital overnight and had to go back a couple of times as I kept getting blinding headaches.

I was off work for a few days and missed a presentation that I was meant to be giving at a conference. The bizarre thing was that a message got garbled somewhere along the way and attendees were told I'd injured my head falling off a horse. Had some weird messages after that.

I don't recommend concussion, it was a truly horrible experience

I’m pretty clumsy, and have banged my head plenty of times. I’m now very prone to concussion, so an innocuous knock for some would lead to concussion for me. It’s a bit of a nightmare.

My advice:

- Rest. Bed rest is best
- Avoid screens. Put down NSC
- Avoid other stimulation, eg podcasts, radio, anywhere with multiple conversations
- Give it time. It can be frustrating but don’t overdo it.

Cheers for the good wishes. I was quite surprised how shocked people in hospital were with a golf ball strike to the head as I thought it must be quite common but it seems not.

Taking it very easy. Hardly any screen time. No reading etc. My mum is driving me back up to Warwick tonight so I can be home rather than here but I am off work this week and intend to spend most of it in bed. I can hardly function. Very odd experience.

Would it be fair to say you're feeling a bit below par?

Ouch. You have my sympathies, but frankly, we need to come up with a better story. You can't go round telling people you sustained such a nasty injury playing golf of all things. That won't do at all.

So from now on, if anyone asks, you sustained a minor head injury whilst fighting off a gang of muggers, but it's alright, you should see the state of the other guys. We'll all back you up if anyone questions it.

Furthest below par I have ever been. That is for sure.

My mum drove me home today so now I am crashed on the sofa feeling sorry for myself. A few mins of screen time here and there with sod all else to do is a bit dull. At least different walls to look at here.

I had concussion when I was a 15. I was at school minding my own business in the corridor going to lunch, when someone running down the corridor accidentally bumped in to me and I bashed my head on the wall. I got sent to the school nurse who put a bag of ice on my bump, but it didn’t stop the black eye. Didn’t think much about it that night, but the next morning I was getting something out the airing cupboard in the landing and the next thing I know my mum is standing there looking worried and saying my name. I had passed out.

Up to Royal Sussex A&E we went where they did some head scans and kept asking me how it happened and if my mum ever hit me. I don’t know if they ever checked with the school. I had the rest of the day off, but was fine after that.

It’s now eleven days since I was whacked and today is the first day I have felt the fog lifting a bit. I tried working on Monday and it was a complete write off - my brain was a scrambled mess and I could hardly string a sentence together.

At least Brighton have been brilliant keep me cheered up, or not.

Lesson learned for me. I am off work again next week and hopefully be fit to drive a car and do something other than sit about listening to stuff.

I was concussed when 17, I was wicketkeeper for my local team and one of our bowlers (spin) had the ball pinging all over the place. I was playing brilliantly as there batsmen was hitting nothing so 4 balls an over where sailing into my gloves. Then a ball zipped out of nowhere and I could nt move my hands fast enough and bang straight between the eyes. Got back up and said I’m fine, swapped ends and my gloves didn’t get near next 5 balls, was walked off (I thought I was still playing well!) and taken to local cottage hospital by our scorer (who was the bowlers wife). Supposedly I bounced off every wall in the hospital as couldn’t walk straight. Best bit whilst I’m being examined in walks their keeper, who had been batting, with blood pouring out of his head. Same bowler took him out as well. I was going to be kept in over night but didn’t want 30mile drive to nearest big hospital.

I got very mild concussion by falling off one of those spring mounted boards in a kid's playground a few years ago. 36 hours of feeling car and sea sick simultaneously followed by the dullest of dull aches in the base of my skull and piercing headaches behind the eyes. Along with zero sympathy from the nest of vipers.
